there isnt much mark up on bulbs. from my past wholesale and distributor past exp. most cases say a hortilux at retail is 120 its bought at wholesale for about 80

not really bro .. i can buy the same magnetic ballast that you get in your systems .. same cord , same base , same bulb, same vented box the ballast comes in .. and can put it together for 1/3 the cost .. notice same parts .. not cheap parts .. there is a big difference . .. if you had to keep replacing things when you made them .. you used cheap parts lol

Dude they dont even make hortilux in 150w we talking 150w hps here not 1000w.... Lets get back on subject he wanted to source 150w hps units or information so i think only people who run 150w hps should chime in. Goodwill or thrift stores even a hardware store are good places to source said items security lights or metal electrical boxes to make your ballast remote to reduce heat in and around the plants. Try HTGsupply"DOTCOM" thats where i got my 150w been running maybe 4 months not a problem love it but trully only good for one plant if you want to veg more then a week or two maybe a month tops with 6 plants. So far ive done a 2 month veg single plant and now im running a 6 plant 12/12 from seed to see the differences in yield and smoke but so far they are super frosty and i still have a month or longer on them so im hoping larger yield and same top notch smoke in a shorter time. That main thing you need to do with a 150w is keep the canopy even do to the fact they only penetrate "with good intensity" around 4-8 inches so LST FIM and Scrog growing methods are a must no x-mas style trees if done right you can pull 1-4oz of a plant under a 150w but you only have 2x2ft to work with really so micro growing and CFL side lighting is a must or add more 150w lights as you can afford it could mount them for side lighting too and not use cfl. Also if you mount 120mm computer fans around 100CFM blowing over the 150w they stay pretty damn cool i had mine in a 17 1/2x18x33inch tall wooden box didn't have a single problem with heat and i run my 150w 2-3 inches over my plants without burn.

HTGSUPPLY also has DIY HPS and MH grow light kits believe its under replacement parts just have to source the metal housings to mount everything up.
but they don't ship to Canada where the OP is, anyone remember him still ?

check here if they have any left of those 150 set ups if you want one in canada. you wont get same prices as the american sites as there is customs fees to deal with to get them up here to begin with. but they can be brought in. or just ask your closet store to.

thanks for all the responses... I'm still a bit confused due to so many opinions! Here are a few questions to try and wrap my head around this!
So first the bulb :
So I now understand there is at least 2 different kind of HPS bulbs, "standard" and "horti".
Is that the "scientific" name or is that a brand or something?
How much of a difference does it make? Is it just the color that is different or also the lifetime? Would it still be better then CFL?
If I understand right, as long as I get a mogul socket, I can find both type of bulbs to fit right?
Ok now the ballast :
I understand that there is different quality of ballast.
How do I know which ones are better then the other? I'm looking for a ballast that is power efficient, rather pay a bit more for the ballast and then less in electricity...
What kind of ballast come with those home-depot ones?
It seems to me like it's much more affordable to buy a HPS security light and then replace the bulb with a better one then to buy the whole unit already made...
Someone was saying they use to DIY there light but don't do it anymore cause they had to replace it so often. Which part where braking? the standard buld or the ballast?

when i say horti i mean that as a horticulture grade bulb. will be made for growing with the correct colours and wants by plants. no sence in wasting that expensive quality on a street light or security light.
digiatl ballast are best for efficiency. they run cooler and that is number 1 in loss of efficiency. they do cost a bit more. that link also has quantum ballast and are decent priced. i have about 10 of the 600 watt. and they have the 400 and it is a switchable ballast. mean you can run either a mh or hps in them. it runs 110v 03 220v. with no switches. its the newest ballast etch. called smart ballasts.
there are others exact same made by others like advanced and his so called bad ass ballast. but if you actualy look at it. it says made by quantum on them. so its a quantum with a diff pain job and double the cost...lol
these days bulb tech has improved alot and therer is no need ror mh anymore. the newer hps have dual colours in them....saves buying 2 types of bulbs. some will say they cause stretch in veg but those run lights to far away. ive done it for many years and no stretch. we normaly dont veg for months and months to see that.
you need to set a budget you can afford and go from there cause that would help in deciding what form of light or wattages.

No there's no Hort bulbs for a security light. HPS is one color, yes they're far better than cfls, for flowering. Just adding some Daylight (6500 K) cfls with a HPS light would replicate the hort. type bulb.
bulbs loose their entensity over time, ballasts last for many years.
It's unfortunate that a wannabe grow guru had to contaminate this thread with all his lofty claims.

you did say you wanted a cheap light .. and your right about the security light if you do want to stay small .. you wont have to change the bulb to a better one .. hps is hps and i think frmrboi would say the same thing ... if your ok with wireing and can read the schematic on a ballast then diy is the way to go .. but i would say use the hps from rona or homedepot ... oh and just a side point .. it was cannabisworks who stated it was his diy that failed ....
