Hey, i'm posting this thread for a buddy. Both he and I are new to growing and this is our first ever grow. Its just in a small indoor computer case. The problem we're experiencing is that the stem is super long on the plant. We are both noobs, so any help would be appreciated! Also, I attached some pictures to show you guys whats happening. Thanks

You just need your light closer, and you will need more intense lighting to get anything worth while off of the plant...but just bury that long stem when you repot and make sure the lights are just close enough to not burn the plant...but as close as you can get the lights the better.

Move your plant closer to the light and I would use more than 1 cfl if I were you, I've got 4 and I could probably use some more myself. You can grow with CFL's but I'm not sure 1 will cut it, from what I've read you want at least 100W per plant, I also read it has to be actual watts and not equivalent. :peace:

at this stage I personally wouldnt do the lst...Its still young enough to just replant it lower in the soil. bury most of that long stem and it will root out. keep the lights close. cfls can be, and should be really close to the thing.

I have to agree with the LST though merely because the stem is so long and flimsy you can just start bending it and growing horizontally whilst moving it closer as well as adding some shaking using a fan. It will make the stem stronger as well as thicker. Although I do with the other guys as far as transplanting and just burying the stem since I did not know it will root out like that. I highly recommend taking LST into consideration since you are using such a small space.

As far as the lighting, definitely will need more lighting as soon as you can get some, as they get bigger they really love having as much light as possible while still being able to maintain the hot temps that CFLs can put off. Its the weakest as far as lighting but still will heat up. I have 3 in my PC grow atm and I really wish I could add more but the temps go up so I have to stick with this. Should be enough to grow 2 decent plants. Check out my grow in my signature link. The first few pages are missing pics but there are more recent pics from the past week and a half or so in there. They are only 21 days old.

There she is. I plan on helping my buddy install another light, and getting her on a 18/6 cycle.
Also, with the LST, I would assume the only reason the side branches havent started growing is because of insufficient light, correct? Or is it just going to take more time?

Please for the love of god people... do not confuse beginners by introducing topics/methods that have no relevancy to their immediate question. Don't even think about training or anything else at this point.. if you try to "train" that seedling you will snap it in half and kill it. I know the mentioning of training was not done with malice, but if you honestly think that attempting to bend the hair thin stalk of a seedling will solve his problem then you probably have some growing and reading to do yourself before you should start giving out advice on forums.

As stated above, not only is the problem the distance from the plant to the light, but the wattage/power/intensity of that light as well. I see that you are running a 13 watt cfl. There is nothing wrong with starting out non-HID, in fact I began the same way over a decade ago. Using anything under a combined 150watts will not provide enough lumens (light energy) for the plant to sustain or achieve healthy growth. Get a single 150watt or multiple bulbs to add up to the 150 and place the lights literally 2 -3 " from the tops (monitoring the temp as to not burn the leaves) Combine this with burying as much of the elongated stem, and you will be on your way to a much sturdier plant. If you would like, use a toothpick or straw inserted into the soil to give the weak stalk a little bit of support as it thickens.

This is the most common problem beginners face when starting out.. dont get discouraged, and good luck!
