Yeah you have to make sure those res temps are on point, do you have a chiller for your res? Do you brew your own teas? I would highly recommend you do if your doing hydro.
I only have 15gallons in my rez, a few more with the tubes included, so I can cool it down fairly easy with frozen bottles. Problem is with the 6 hours overlap where it's day time for the plants, daytime outside, and I'm sleeping, 'and' there's exceptional hot weather here (80f+).
Although a chiller was on my wishlist, it is somewhat of a luxury item in my case, I'd only need it for a few weeks, couple of months tops a year which relatively makes it more expensive than it already is. The rest of the year the temps aren't just acceptable, but ideal (68-70). I started out running sterile last round (bleach). This round I wanted to rely on Root Excelurator + acceptable temps only, which I've done the last 6 weeks or so of the previous run as well. Saving bennies for a future run (won't brew them myself though).
That said... the reason it's no longer on my wishlist is cause I just bought a chiller!!
1/6HP for my 15 gallons, 450watt, that's more than my veg bulb. Overkill, but I got a sick deal on one. Just tested in small container, now hooking it up to main rez.
I dont run hydro no more only cause I like soil buds better. They have more flavor IMO.
I've grown on soil before, organics and even mineral nutes in the past. Both soil and hydro can result in equally tasty bud, depending on nutes, drying and especially proper curing, IMO.
But the reason I grow hydro is just because it's more fun for me not because it's better (and when I see bio/organics on a menu in a coffeeshop I'm sold
). An added bonus is the superfast vegging, especially for cropping and canopy control, I get to play with my plants twice as often.
Just found this pic for another thread, my first attempt at canopy control, 6 years ago:
