suspicious fan noise

Hey RIU, Do you think I have to worry about the meter reader guy hearing a fan? I have a 6 inch fan that is quite loud and can be slightly heard on the outside, I have a closet and on the outside by the pump meters are the electrical meters. I do have a 4 inch fan though that is somewhat quieter. I think I may have to go with that. Stay safe. Have a good one.

You can get a speed controller to lower the speed and noise. Another thing you can do is get a larger fan... it should move the same volume of air at a slower and quieter speed. You can build a box out of a walmart tote and foam and put your inline in that and hang it by bungee cords.

i used a double quilt folded up and wrapped around my inline fan for my 12 planter that worked very well but delvite's right about temps u gotta be carefull ,, i only had the quilt idea in the last 5 weeks of flower n it got rather warm as it was on constantly but i did keep an eye on it and let it breath now and agen to cool down but its a right pain unwrappin n re wrappin it .. the other method i would of used is a quiet box ,,u can buy em for like 60 quid ish online from dr blooms

id go with delvite on this one though ,,the guy knows what he's doing and i suspect has been doing things his own way for a long time with excellence

lol sleeping bag and bungees and ur telling this guy to go with his answer? obviously not a very handy do it your selfer and doesnt sound very safe to me.. build a sound proof box! make the frame out of mdf to house the fan and line the inside of the box with sound board caulking all joints.. grab a fan speed controller and ur good to go.. most the noise is caused at the end of the run where your air is exiting.. not trying to bash the sleeping bag idea just doesnt seem very logical and is just 1 more problem to worry about..

yea i wouldnt wrap a blanket or sleeping bag around a fan. doesnt sound very smart. plus it'll limit the airflow.

if you wrap your fan in cloth it could easily catch fire.

this must be the newbie section..............what do u do for your fan? how is a sleeping bag going to limit airflow? sleeping bags dont burn very well

first i never stated that he doesnt grow big fat buds lol its not very hard i grow big fat buds too.. that has nothing to do with the safety of wrapping your fan in a blanket or sleeping bag rofl.. if u want the added risk of a potential fire hazard go right ahead! and i already stated what i do.. build a sounds proof box leaving openings for both ends of fan to stick out to connect your ducting..

i guarantee you its MUCH safer to go WITHOUT blankets/cloths/fabric wrapped around your fan than it is to do so.

what you could gain by doing it (less noise) is cancelled out by starting a fire and burning your place down/getting on the news...or overheating your fan and ruining it.

rude might have been the wrong word................i just think u could have used the sticky from right here at riu instead of something from some off brand site

its called google search.. you cant possibly rely on 1 site for all your questions rofl.. you have to take ideas from several people and combine to create what works best for you.. google is your best friend

i would never cheat on riu...............................there was 40 pages of talk about different ways to make things quiet.....................probably ten thousand more

good for you i how ever do whats best for me and my situations and if that means find information where ever i can find it then im going to go right ahead.. you think someone read 1 book and says ok all the information i need is in this 1 book and im not going to cheat on it rofl.. take information from any source you can and google searches are alot faster than waiting for someone to reply

Ok do not listen to any moron telling you to wrap anything around the fan. Not sure why anyone would tell you to do such a dumb thing. Your increasing your fire hazard chances and just destroying the fan as you over heat the bearings inside until they pop or seize. If you can hear the fan and its in a closet where all the meters are chances are the smell will get out too so basically you have chosen a very bad location make sure your light cords are correct insulated and not old or cheap as rf leaks and can be detected easily if not shielded right. Next you can build a simple baffle box for the fan or move the fan out of the closet using ducting to the room to move the noise away form the outter wall. Fans make little noise unless broken so hiding the sound is easy. best beat though is a baffle box basically a small plywood box lined with insulation that the fan goes inside of then ducting out each end for intake out take. costs about $15 bucks to do maybe $30 if you spring for the heat shielded kind to make sure extra fire safe.
