Swine Flu

In the Uk there were 55000 new cases in the past week and we have had 30 deaths so far, all but a few had seriously underlying medical issues. How is it spreading through the states? Are you worried? Personally I am unsure whether to see it any differently to seasonal flu, which kills 30000 in a bad year, mainly the old and frail. Thoughts anyone?:joint:

swine flu is prety much the same as any other flu, it kills a few thousand old sick poor people, then when people get immune/vaccinated, you stop hearing about it

i liked the jokes people made about swabing pig anuses that started it

I have to disagree, as at the rate the infection in the UK is going 20 million people will have/had it by January according to the Chief medical officer and vaccines are not due to start dribbling through until September and those will go to frontline health workers first.

The Uk has opened the first dedicated website and phone line in the world for swine flu assesments today, Doctors cant cope and its only the summer!

Remember bird flu? Wasn't that supposed to wipe out the world too? Relax. Fear is what the government feeds on. Makes you go to them for the rescue. IMO, it has more to do with money and power than anything else. Oh, and so much for socialized "free" medicine. Looks like it's handling the problem very well. *rollseyes*

You dont know what you are talking about Im afraid, In England alone there are 100000 more cases than last week and currently there are 870 in hospital with 10% of those critical. It is hitting under 14's the hardest. I would normally agree with you about government hype but this time it is different. People born before 1957 would seem to have some defence as its similar to a strain that was virulent prior to then. It may not be as serious in the states yet, but it will be.:joint:

You forget that that the UK is only 900miles from furthest Northern tip to Southern and has 60million people so with 155000new case in 2 weeks the maths is easy. On the news just now it said we are flying someone to Sweden to care for an otherwise healthy person who has swineflu and needs a machine to run both her heart and lungs. 1 in 6 of the 30+ deaths have had no underlying health issues. 867 have been admitted to hospital in only 2 weeks...It is unpresidented and worrying as a father of a 3 year old who is in a high risk category. I live in a rural area and it is in most villages now, but in certain built up city areas 1in 5 now have it. So nationwide it certainly is!:joint:

I see that I have to beat this dead horse. Understand something people, particularly my UK bretheren. Most if not all of the infomation people are basing their hysteria on comes from the mainstream media! If is the truth you seek on this or any other topic go to the correct sources and the mainstream media has never been and never will be a reliable source. I've got a question. How many RIU members reading this thread are either infected themselves or know someone that is.

This was attempted in 1976. There was an imminent pandemic of swine flu! A vaccine was hurriedly put together and rushed through trials then given to many americans. More peole got sick from the vaccine and died than from the supposed flu itself! Food for thought ya'll.

I think you are all misunderstanding me...I am fully aware of media hyple bla bla bla, I was just wanting to see what the Us view is. My figures though are accurate and nothing to do with media and to be honest more people heard about swine flu due to knowing someone who was seriously ill, when this happened the press jumped heavily on the bandwagon. It is a fact that Britain, England especially, has far more cases than anywhere else pro rata as we are the worlds travel intersection with Heathrow.

My concern level for H1N1 is right at ZERO.

Paranoia will consume you.

It's just the flu. Do the normal shit you would to avoid the flu and you will be fine.

A new issue surrounding Swine Flu is misdiagnosis. A 6 year old girl was given tamiflu for suspected swineflu and she died shortly after as she had meningitus. It is so present in medical workers minds that they are forgetting to check for more deadly and easier to diagnose illnesses.
