Those are some tall Colas! +rep for those ladies! I've been told by all the old school growers to use a scope or magnifying glass to truly tell. Cloudy trichomes for head high, amber for body high (amber trichomes are the thc turning into cbn). I'm waiting for my trichomes to get 50-70% cloudy and then i'm going to cut. I also go by strain, i'm growing Casey Jones and Grand Daddy Purple and I know they have an average flower time of 8-10 weeks.

@925Grow'N:
When you harvest at 50-70% cloudy, like you say (I guess you have done this before), how many % amber would you get after curing?

I try to harvest at the same time as you, when most thrics are cloudy. Not amber, as even buds with no amber will get it during curing.

I guess all the people saying 50% amber / 50 % milky when harvesting are full of shit (or do not cure).

I too agree with the 50/50 being too late. I've been lucky enough to have found a mentor with over 20 years experience so he shows me first hand what I'm talking about above. This will be my first harvest so I can't tell you a percentage number.

My reason for having some amber is for my lower back pain. I want mostly an uplifting energetic high but would like some pain relief for my back.

I believe the amber trichome is the thc turning into cbn. I cut a little nug off my Casey Jones when the trichomes were clear. 3 days later they were white. I plan on cutting them down, hanging for 4-6 days in a quick cure hanging rack. Then putting them into Bell glass jars. I will leave open for few hours, close until I see condensation and burp until condensation is out, then repeat over again. I plan of doing this for at least a week and then store in jars. My plan is to cure one jar for at least a month to 6 weeks!

What do you think? Basically when I look and most are milky with occasional amber trichomes here and there then I chop. Also, I still am a new grower, I don't count my research before hands on experience. This is from my personal experience and I know when it comes to this many have their own personal preference.

You lose out on bud mass if you chop before they are done. Most of the buds density is added the last week or 2. It's worth the wait. When to harvest depends on your personal preferences as to what type of high you want.
all cloudy=head high, max thc levels, lose out on bud mass though, less cannaboids.
all amber=body high, lower thc levels and more cannaboids and you dont lose out on bud mass.
50/50=mixed high, thc and cannaboid levels pretty even but you still lose out on mass.

I have Casey Jones and Grand Daddy Purple for my first grow at day 55 of flower. The Casey Jones has way more trichomes around the flowers and leaves where the Grand Daddy is just frosty around the flowers, looks like little white dust spots. I keep thinking it's mold but it's just a ton of trichomes around the buds.

Old school method is get a radio shack 20-30x lighted magnifier and go for 50% amber 50% cloudy and recognize the top buds will outstrip the lower buds so it's a longer harvest but very very connesieur based. After the cure you will just giggle with it!

Sorry Stalwart for sounding dumb but what do you mean by the top buds "outstrip" the lower buds? I just want to know because i'm on my first grow and would love more knowledge!

Thanks!

Post pics mcgravity please!
