t5 maximum effective distance?

I have done some searching and can't really find a clear answer...

Anyone know what the maximum effective distance of a t5 lighting system is? i.e. the furthest away it can be from the canopy while still providing usable light to the plants

I realize that florescents in general need to be close. But my question has to do with the maximum distance.

well there is no exact distance but the light itself travels down a little less than three feet effectively for the plant so based on your plants height you can judge

I keep mine a little more than 8" away from my plants in my cabinet for heat reasons. I'd say however close you can get without temperature problems is the ideal.
