taking a cutting for sexing purposes -- need help!

Hey Guys,

So this grow I'm going to do something I've never done before. When I top at 5-6 nodes and knock the plant back to two nodes (Uncle Ben's technique), I want to use that cutting to sex the plant. What's the easiest way to do that?

I don't want to keep the cutting as a rooted clone -- I just want to use it to sex the plant and then I'll toss it out. I've got four plants but realize I really have space only for three, so one has to go. If I know which the males ones are, I'll toss those, then veg the for-sure females a little longer before flipping.

I've read just stick the cutting in water until it roots, then stick the root end in a rock wool cube. Is it that easy? At what point would I switch to 12/12, and will it take the same 7-10 days to show sex?

Thanks,
KG

i think you could go straight 12/12 since you wont be harvesting the clone.that's the easiest way i can recall right now.

I have heard of people placing the cutting in a glass of water under 12/12 personally I usually sex them 12/12 from seed and then top and veg.

I always use the glass of water, this works great for cuttings you don't intend to keep just don't let the water dry out. You don't even need to root them. Just take the cutting and use a razor and cut a 45 degree cut on the stem about 5 inches down and place immediately in labeled party cups "aka solo cups". Remove all the lower foliage except the top set of fan leaves just as if you were taking a clone smaller to medium size side branching works quite well because it will need less water to stay alive. To speed this process up place cutting in dark for 36 hrs or so first. Then into 12/12 or if you have a separate space other than your main flowering room a 13w cfl works for a small batch and you can set the timer to 10 on 14 off to increase the flowering signal. Males should show sex first so that is nice. The issue with sexing a plant then reverting back to veg is the added stress this causes. As a positive I have heard this stress will help weed out hermies... but did it cause the issue? IDK. Haha Peace out and good wishes on you with all four fems or maybe one male to collect pollen from and make a few lower buds have seeds? Always nice to get new seeds.
