Do you clean the lens before taking the picture? I have an HTC as well and my camera lens gets craps on it all the time(fingerprints, dust etc.)
ya you should not use the flash , clean your lens use natural lighting
and hold the phone steady.
your phone probably has a high resolution camera setting check your phones manual online to learn how to use the camera properly

Regular room lighting like Bbcchance and sunni said, keeping it clean is a must and hold it still is the hardest and to get really good clear close up shots, spend the 11 bucks and order one of these, http://www.amazon.com/Besties-Unive...&sr=8-13&keywords=smart+phone+camera+lens+kit.... they work great and it beats the zoom offered on my S5... lets you get really close shots to check out your trichomes....
