Tangerine Dream - Barney's Farm Smoke/Grow Report

Hi gang!
It's time for another medical marijuana report from closed4fishing.

Strain: Tangerine Dream (Feminized)
Breeder: Barney's Farm
Grower: closed4fishing
Grow Info:
I received 10 seeds in my order. They were very light immature looking seeds and I was a bit unimpressed with the look of the seeds. 7 of the 10 popped.
I got 5 different phenos...what the hell? They were as follows:

1. 70% Sativa/30% Indica. It grew to about 6'2'' and the buds were fairly compact and large. Harvested at 85 days.
2. 90% Sativa/10% Indica. It grew to about 6"5 and the buds were whispy thin and irritatingly airy. Harvested at 100 days.
3. (3 plants like this) 80% Sativa/20% Indica. It grew to about 6'2'' and the buds were very airy at first, but tightened up at the end. Harvested at 85 days.
4. 50% Sativa/50% Indica. It was a mutant slow grower but ended up at 26 inches. It was given an extra week of veg. Harvested at 70 days.
5. 60% Sativa/40% Indica. I could tell by the leaves in veg that this was the most indica growth pattern so I topped it to get more colas. Harvested at 75 days.

All were grown in Fox Farm Ocean Forest/Happy Frog/Planting Soil mixture. FF Nutes (Grow, Tiger Bloom, Big Bloom). Vegged for 3 wks under 400W MH. Flowered under 1750W HPS. Dried for 7 days in 50% humidity then into jars for cure. Each Sativa pheno yielded at least 2oz-3oz. The best indica pheno yielded 3.5oz and the worst 1oz. Very finicky Sativas.

Cure at time of smoke test:
30 days

Bag Appeal: Sativa Phenos (B), Indica Phenos (A-)
It will never be in a bag though, just my jars because this is all for me!

Smell:
Very unique smells coming from these plants. Sometimes they reminded me of a creamy nutty coffee drink. Other times, it was a bit more skunky with a little citrus zest.

Taste:
The Sativa phenos all seem to have a creamy nutty taste to them with hints of chocolate and fruits. The mutant indica pheno really tasted like tangerines while the other more indica pheno tasted fruity and skunky. Not much variation in the taste on the Sativa phenos, but a bit in the indica phenos.


Effect:
The sativa phenos are definitely better than coffee. You can take a puff and work on something for 2-3 hours before you realize it. Very happy, social but not too social, if you know what I mean. The effect is great, even if you are sleepy it only takes 10 minutes to wake up with this stuff. It also seems to help my stomach in the morning. The indica phenos are pretty energetic too, but if you keep smoking them, you'll be napping. Very fun high though!

Insomnia (Indica in high doses)
back/neck pain (Indica in medium/high doses)
appetite (Sativa any dose)
Stress relief in small quantities (Sativa an Indica)

Final Thoughts:
This was a tough strain to grow and the indica phenos are few and far between. I am revegging my indica pheno and I won't be growing the Sativa phenos because of the flowering time. I'm going back to the Apollo 13bx for my Sativa. Good weed, but not a great job of breeding in my opinion. For female seeds, these have way too many phenos! I'll still probably try them again in a couple years because it was a good pull and it's good smoke!

I forgot to add that I don't have any pictures of the most indica pheno flowering. I forgot to take pictures before I cut it, but it was super hefty. There are bud shots of it though. The 3rd and 4th pictures are of the most indica pheno.

Closed - How long did you germ your Barney's TD? Been four days and these things still haven't popped. WTF. And, I agree with your assessment on "immature looking seeds". Think Barney's TD need further refinement.

I germed for about 3 days. A couple popped after 2 days, but the rest took 3 or more. Don't over soak them but don't let them dry out... they are finicky as hell! Good luck!

FYI.... This stuff seems to get stronger the longer you cure it. It has lost a little of the taste at 2 months, but the strength seems almost double! Good stuff!

I agree about the potency increasing substantially with a decent cure. I grew just one TD out of my 5 pack. It is definately a sativa pheno. Probably the 80 % variety, by your description. After about a month they seemed even stronger. Heck this stuff is strong after a week of drying.

I planted the rest the other day to try and find more of a indica pheno.

Nice report and nice job on the grow. It sure doesn't look like a cup winning strain to me though. That Cannabis cup is definitly fixed. haha

For the feeding did you follow the guidelines on their website or did you do your own? Also this is prob a really noob question but how can you tell what phenos you have. I know the the difference between the two but how can you tell if one is more then another. Thanks man and stay high

thanks for this report, really interesting read. i found the tangerine dream indica phenos had more potent highs than the sativa leaning ones. i was able to try both at the shop i sat and rolled joints before heading out to explore.
taste is very citrusy and ethereal, the high wasn't overbearing at all. in comparison, the violator kush had a powerful heavy stone. to be honest tangerine dream is not my favorite from barney's farm i think some of their other strains are more consistent like the red dragon and laughing buddha, but what sets tangerine dream apart is the taste.

Definitely all over the place in the genetics I had mothered out what turned out to be the "extreme sativa" pheno exactly how yours looks there....got a bunch of plant material that was covered in crystals that wasn't much good for anything other than hash...but plenty of good bud off them, and with the high you absolutely can't complain...I have jars with those hash makings just waitin and when I'm jonesin for a J..Ill tell u the trim gets me higher than even the tasty weed we get around here for 100bucks a quater

still weeding through mothers trying to find a really nice one....

Hey buddy, thanks for looking in on the report. I had a hard time with the nutes on the Sativa phenos at first. The flowering time messed up my normal routine so nitrogen deficiency and magnesium deficiencies reared their heads a time or two. The indica pheno went pretty smoothly. Here is my routine:

Transplant into 3gallon pot at 7 inches and veg for 2-3 weeks.
I don't feed every watering, but usually 1-2 times week in veg and flower.

Soil makeup
50% FF Ocean Forest
30% FF Happy Frog
20% Perlite (well mixed but with more ocean forest near the bottom of the pot and more happy frog near the top. The OF helps with nitrogen during flowering so you start a nice fade at about 6-7 weeks)
Usually requires watering every other day with this mix.

Veg Nutes:
1tsp/gal - Grow Big
1Tbsp/gal - Big Bloom
First watering after transplant to 3gal pot I will use KangaRoots from FF

Flowering:
First watering during flowering get's Open Sesame and MicroBrew

Flowering Nutes (once a week)
1tsp-1.5tsp/gal Tiger Bloom
1Tbsp/gal Big Bloom

Special Flowering Nutes (I use these only one time each, not every week like they recommend)
Beastie Bloomz - follow label instructions
Cha-Ching - follow label instructions

Flush:
Nothing but water 10-14 days.

Note:
Some would say I starve my plants but they finish with a nice 3/4 plant fade and a great clean burn and taste.

As to your question about telling the difference between indica and sativa phenotypes, you can usually tell by the look of the leaf in veg. The wider leaf plants are indica and the thinner leaf plants are sativa. You can really tell once they start flowering. The sativas will usually stretch very tall while the indica stay short. The leaf differences are even more noticable during flowering.

I know what you mean wheezer. They don't look that nice, but if there's one thing I've learned it's never judge a bud by it's looks. I've had a worthless stringy ass sativa bud surprise the hell out of me with a psychedelic edge and I've had beautiful nugs of dank looking indica that have had shitty highs.

Oh and I'm positive that the cannabis cup is fixed! Good call.
