You need to clean the meter very well useing distilled water... and some kitchen towel paper to make sure there is no residue left... the cleaner you get it, before and in betweeen every step, the more accurate it will be.

It also depends on where your located. I'd imagine water in big cities has all sorts of shite in it. For example my local water supply has extreme amount of lead in it at the moment. Luckily though the local council are giving out free bottled water to residents so im ok.

The chlorine may eve kill some of the nasty stuff in the ground if you use soil...

I was wondering, I have access to river water, maybe 50 steps from my house.... would this be good for my plants?
river water is usuallr runoff from the greasy oily streats and the nasty roundup used on farms and gardens its prolly not that great of an idea to use un treated water you just dnt know whats in it could be some mo up the up stream dumping used oil in the or antifreeze or dead cats or rubbin one out in the stream ya never know some ppl are preatty stupid

Erm, I'm out in the country basicaly on the edge of town at the foot of the mountain where the water originates from... polution is not realy a problem just going by the amount and variety of frogs and toads I have here.

Can anyone answer this one...

If my manual says calibrate to 6.86 and all I have is 7.0 solution, should I calibrate to 7.0 using the solution or 6.86?

I have been doing this for a while now, I'm not a monster grower like fdd...but I keep my self supplied with some nice stuff. I use tap water, there... I said it. I used to wait 24 hrs before I used it, but now it's straight out of the tap. I have a tds/ph meter and I use it. out of the tap my water reads 43 ppm and 6.0 ph. I have tried different kinds of water and I can't tell the difference. but, different cities have different water....:)

Use about 7.0. Some meters default to 7.0 to indicate an error reading that's why the meter makers change it just slightly to things like 6.86...so there is a difference. I would shoot for 6.95 just so you know it isn't stuck at 7.0
