one other thing with RomenyCare is that i think he said at some point that richer people will get less of a voucher and poorer peolpe would get a more substantial voucher.

Romny wants to keep Medicare alive for the short term. Romeny wants to give people vouchers, that can only be used on healthcare, to retirees to use toward purchasing their own health care all while keeping medicare as a viable option for rewtirees. a retirees healthcare choice might cost less than, equal to, or more than what the voucher is worth, but the choice is left up to them on who they choose. Romeney feels that if left up to the private sector, there would be fierce competition for the persons voucher and this would create a better product at a lower price. this idea reflects the republican ideal that it is the individual's right and responsibility to choose what is best for themselves in a free market with some regulation. the problem with this system is if the voucher value alone does not guarantee good care.

Obama doesn't talk about Medicare's future except that he is going to extend it for 8 years. this, while he is going to shave $700 billion from medicare's budget to initially finance Obamacare. Obama is going to cut back on Medicare to a degree so that the current provisioning will last an extra 8 years, but again does not talk about what lies after that. this represents the democratic ideal that citizens should be protected from business by a high level of government which produces a more reliable product. the problem with this system is that, for the government, money is not an object.
Nice reply..

So why is what we have now bad? I agree Money is not their greatest concern. If we cut here it will get spent there.

The answer to the question?

Romney, like Obama believes that he can make better decisions about your life, your body and your labor than you can. Both of them believe that you must do as your told, they are simply wrestling for the throne to be the one to tell you what to do. They are brothers in that regard and in their disregard for an individuals right to peaceful self determination.

because it is not financially sustainable. as is, the baby boomers will strip medicare of all its funds and there will be nothing left to take care of the rest of us who are currently paying into it.

the future of medicare will be decided by this election. either we have to agree to pay higher taxes indefinitely to continue medicare as is(democrats), give the private sector money via vouchers to take care of the elderly(republican), or some other idea.

the democratic argument against vouchers is that medicare would collapse on itself because everyone would be getting insurance through the private sector and the safety net of medicare would melt away. the democrats want to keep medicare because they believe goverment should be the one to look after the welfare of the citizens. oddly enough, this is the republicans argument for vouchers as they feel it would rid the country of the current burden that is medicare leading to smaller government, less goverment spending, less regulation, and shifting the responsibility of choosing healthcare to the individual as the individual is the one to best know what they need.

the healthcare issue epitomizes the each sides' governing philosophy: in most political respects, democrats feel one national size fits all, while republicans think the individual/states should be able to choose which size fits them best.

it should also be said that this argument is at least as old as the 1960 election. if you go back and listen to the 1st Kennedy v Nixon debate, they debate this very topic and even hold the same positions as their respective parties today.

another side note is that vouchers can only be used for healthcare, this is to prevent old retired man/woman from blowing it all on gambling, drugs, or being robbed blind by their relatives. it's like a store credit, you can't use it anywhere but the healthcare industry.
