terror in the growroom, burnt out lamps, burnt popcorn smell.

So today I came home from work to a terrifying smell of burnt paper/popcorn. Run down to check on the grow room, 2 of my lights are burnt out, everything else seems to be flickering off for a few seconds. Unplugged the system, some housekights are also flickering off though not as often. I really don't wanna leave these guys with too much darkness. Anyone have any ideas?

maybe it caused a power surge, especially if its not just the lights broken, check your power box thing

My roommate is actually an electrical technician but he's rather lazy so I wouldn't expect much help. And otherwise hiring an electrician would seem to kbe putting myself out there. I'm an engineering major with more than a few electronic engineering courses under my belt. Pretty sure I could figure it out on my own with some guidance.

Everything is connected through surge protectors. Attached to said surge protector is 4, 60 Watt bulbs at a total of 240 volts, and 2, 100 Watt lamps at another 240 volts, then a small circulating fan. Only using 4 of the 6 outlets.

all kidding aside. I would say you have a wiring problem. If your house lights are flickering & two bulbs burnt out at the same time I'm willing to bet that you have some loose & or bad wiring somewhere in the house that may have arc'd (causing the bulbs to blow) the lights flickering could be caused by a couple of things, wiring having poor connections where there isn't enough metal to carry the current or something like a large appliance suddenly creating a large demand of juice dropping the overall voltage in your house. Aside from having to worry about ladies I'd be more concerned about the risk of fire that could result from an arc where this wiring problem may be? If I ere you I'd look into it very seriously & try & find the source of your trouble.

All in all what your saying is still kind of vague, Go in to more detail with what's happening & what your running & I'll try to help. just cause you only plugged 440W running on what I'm assunming is a 120V 15 amp circuit doesn't mean that's the only thing running on that circuit, could also have house lights on it maybe even the microwave but I don't think a overloaded circuit is your problem or you'd be tripping the breaker/fuse. I really think you have a more serious electrical problem. GL will help if I can

Sounds like a loose wire to me also.

because you say it is affecting the entire house,my guess is that it is before your breaker box.call your local power company,they will come out & check wiring from pole to fusebox & confirm everything is OK.if they dont find the problem, start at the breaker & work to your lights checking every connection. tighten every screw holding a wire & when you come to a wirenut, pull each wire to see if any are loose.
since you said your lights are240 volts,I am guessing you are not in N.America. basic troubleshooting is the same but much is different on the other side of the big pond.maybe a European sparky here will chime in w/ better ideas.

Lose wire, I had the same problem. people told me i must of messed up the wireing....... it wasn't me it was the people that wired the hose 20 years ago, it just took a big draw to make it mess up

"loose wires start fires" that what electricians say. Sometimes the screws that hold wires down back off over the years, stay safe and check it out.
