the 2012 hunting thread. lets see some pics!!!!!!

You had me @ venison. I'm too lame to trudge through the woods any more......but a nice neck roast in oven with root vegetables that I grew myself along with home grown garlic, rosemary and thyme has my mouth watering. I go to da U.P. eh! Spare me any Finlander jokes!!!

According to my field & stream magazine today is the first best day of the rut and provides a strong kick start to the 2012 season. The moon phase today is going to be the waxing gibbous. This event, combined with late-October temps, will goad deer into the daylight movement. So today is when bucks start looking for any interest from does.

This morning bucks will be lingering around food sources, so they'll be returning to their bedding areas in shooting light. Which obviously is too late now.
This evening, pick a stand site near a farm field, food plot, or big-woods food source such as a clear-cut. Get there early to capitalize on that moon-induced day-light movement. Have your buck call handy to entice any bucks that cruse by.

I am going to be going hunting this afternoon after college today. I also have some "liquid deer cane" I am going to lay out near the garden and tree line where I am going to be hunting. I am also thinking of taking some peanut butter and nailing it to a tree.

Good look and best of luck on the new rut. Get some big bucks post them here.

If anyone is interested the other best days of the rut are: Nov 2nd, Nov 6th, Nov 10th, Nov 19th, Nov 24th and Dec 9th. I believe everything after that goes into the late rut stage and it will be a bit harder to get those big bucks. Mark these days on your calenders.

Went hunting today and got me a nice doe. Was debating on not taking her, but I hadn't seen much of anything this season and I am aching for some jerky. My arrow passed right through her and I couldn't manage to find it. She ran 30 yards and dropped with a double lung shot.

It's nice and cold outside so I'm letting her hang for the night and going to quarter the meat up tomorrow. She was heavy as hell, I was hanging from the rope trying to get her to go up but it wasn't working, so I grabbed her in a headlock from the bed of my truck and lifted her with one arm while pulling the rope with the other. In hindsight, I should have tied the rope to my towing ball and pulled her up that way, but it didn't occur to me till after the fact. I weigh 170 so she def weighs more than that and she is already cleaned out.

nice doe green thumb. I can't wait till rifle season I didn't get one last year but I also didn't get out much last year. I'm getting one this year though I don't care if I need to soak down with doe in heat and walk around with the 12 gauge hoping to get attacked.lol I just seen a nice 8+ point buck just down the road from my house I want that big boy for sure. I haven't beaten my first buck still to this day I was only 15 and I got a 9 point buck. I'd like to go down south to hunt I know places like tennesee are loaded with deer I heard the bag limit was like 2 deer a day up here you can only get 1 per season rifle but you can get 2 archery. I'd loved to get a moose liscense theirs probally more moose around here then deer atleast I see moose more often but I never win the lottery for the moose tag.

 Thanks. I've been tempted to get some doe estrus urine to lay out somewhere and see it if actually works. I myself have never tried it, but heard of a guy getting attacked by a buck for putting it on himself. I haven't quite decided if I am going to use my rifle this year. It's an extra license that I would have to buy, even though my license covers elk and black bear if I so choose to hunt them. I tell you what though, my step dad is pissed because last year I was the only one to get a deer and I just bagged one yesterday. HAHA. Another thing I know he is mad about is that he buys rage broad heads hoping that he will get a pass through and it has yet to happen for him, all the while I am using some cheap 10 dollar broad heads from Walmart. I'm sure my crossbow has a lot to do with it though. That fucker is powerful.

I tried using the doe in estrus last year at the end of the season I just put it on my boots though but no luck. I have heard they will attack you if you wear it theirs even a warning on the bottle. I wouldn't do it with a rifle but buck shot will put them down quick.
I only got about a week for rifle season though I can't wait I just seen a big buck 1/4 mile down the road from my house by a field and he ran up the logging road which is perfect cause the logger has it posted so I'm the only one that goes up their I can't wait.

Damn, I may put some on my dogs just to get a closer look at them on my walks... can't believe a deer would have the balls to attack a human.

Yep. They will fuck a man up quickly. BUT, i don't think i've EVER heard of an incident where the deer attacked out of self-defense or predatory nature. It's damn near ALWAYS related to them trying to get laid lol.

Might end up with pups with antlers ;)

The doe in estrus would only work during the start and peak of the rut I would think. End of the season would seem like it would be too late for it to have an effect since most of the does are not in heat anymore and the bucks start becoming nocturnal again.

Is all you do is hunt with a rifle? If so, you should try bow hunting. It is a whole different experience. You should also consider getting the Primos buck roar call, I've used it and called in 3 does and 1 buck. But it was on land I wasn't allowed to hunt on and I just needed to test out the call. Good luck on the buck, hopefully you will get him. Bait that fucker if you need too.

Also, mid November is peak of rut so the bucks will be real stupid at that point. Oh, I had quartered out the meat from my deer today and I filled 4 gallon bags for myself and gave the rest away. I gave a full back leg and some other meat to my fiancees parents and I gave my step dad the heart and the tenderloins. I kept like 30 pounds of meat for myself for jerky.

I was out shooting my compound bow and was fine tuning the sights and this is the result. I do not use a peep site only regular fiber optic sights. This was also shot from 40 yards.
