I just put this together and hooked it up to my 120mm PC fan cooling a waist high dresser/cab. All the materials cost me roughly $25. The hardest part was hooking it up to my fan due to the placement of the fan in my cab.
One thing I noticed is that it's hard to find the smaller pencil cup in stores, well at least here in Hawaii. Even online through Amazon I could only find the larger cup so I went and got this pencil cup
http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/169990/Office-Depot-Brand-Metro-Mesh-Jumbo/?cm_cat=2000000353#reviewTab I think mine measured about 4" diameter and rougly 6" tall. It was not curved like the one in the original post. I then took 3" or 2" (fogot) net pots I had lying around and glued them together at the top - cut out one of the "bottoms" and I made the inner "cup" as pictured.
Then I just followed directions as stated. The carbon layer is much thicker than the original post however it's still a very clean and sleek look and build to it. Even with the thicker carbon filter the fan is still pulling air through it strong - Not sure the filter silenced the fan much in reality which was what I was hoping since it's right next to my bed.
The cup was slightly touching the fan blades so I made a cardboard "frame" for the opening that connects to the fan for a small spacer - that did the trick! Then used black duct tape to secure and seal the slight openings around the filter meeting the fan. My PC fan is rated at only 74cfm, so right now lights are off and it's PM but I'm highly confident that during the day temps should keep to roughly roughly 81-85 degrees F. Oh yeah, I only run a 100w blackstar UFO on two SCROG plants right now so heat from lights is negligible.
Plants haven't even started budding yet (2 weeks into 12/12) but with the positive reviews of odors begone plus a thicker layer of carbon I am confident the filter shall perform as advertised.
