There's a ton of DIY and L.E.D. comparison threads on RIU. Nothing on the internet taught me more about L.E.D. quicker than I learned here. You need to understand what a Bin is and what CRI or color rendering Index means. I think you probably already understand Kelvin.. Anyway it's early yet hopefully that gets ya started.

on my diy led experiments I use a very simple driver. I wire the leds in series to get a 150 volt load requirement then just use a bridge rectifier and filter capacitor to convert 120volt ac line voltage to 160 volt DC coupled with a lm317 or 338 constant current sink.http://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/26414/an-lm350-can-i-have-both-constant-current-and-specific-voltage it actually gives me a driver efficiency of about 94% and cost less that $5 to build using parts from E-bay. their are some very effiecient 5 and 10 watt diodes on the market and several low powered diode will provide more uniform coverage and less "hot spots" then a small number of high powered COBs. here is one example of this http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/samsung-semiconductor-inc/SI-B8T342560WW/1510-1324-ND/5875178 144 lumens per watt using small SMDs on a mounting strip. 6 of these in series would produce 28800 lumens at 148.8 volts and could be used with the simple driver described above for a total power drain of 216 watts. so far my experiments with leds have used 4000k diodes.seems that even high end led grow light makers can not agree on the best spectrum for led grow lights so it's still a matter of trial and error

here's mine as of now. im waiting on an irfp460 to replace the irfp250 i had laying around to prototype with. its only good for 200v and repeatedly going to 120v gets it pretty hot.

i took pictures without a sunglass lens in front of the camera and realized you couldn't see squat, it blinds the room. The pictures you can actually make out are taken from behind sunglasses.

it's drawing 120v @ 5.45a in the lights and 12v 1.3a in the fans and oscillator.

China's wasting no time get this MOSFET here, it's been a month.... uh just my luck for complaining it'll end up arriving promptly tomorrow. good luck yea?

oh shit i didnt write in there that those are 3000-3500 mA LEDs each. Same goes with the whites if you choose those. crucial shit.

if you wanted a weaker light then maybe get a bigger inductor or just string one or two extra LEDs in the way like mouricem00 is saying.

I see "sunspots" for a while when I make the mistake of looking at leds without very dark sunglasses :):):). What do you look at for efficiency? Ive been just turning down the volume, so to speak, to get to a lower power drain.

I saw these led globes yesterday. Just a band of spinning led making an optical illusion. Thinking about making a small grow spectrum version for a veging plant or cactus idk cool stuff.

I use caloric test to determine efficiency of the diodes. but that is not important to me. I grow one strain. super silver haze and in comparing lights I look at how the plant performs under the light compared to my main grow under fluorescent. im a PU MMJ grower just trying to keep the medicine bowl full for me and my so taste and effectiveness is more important than maximum yield or shorter grow time. but so far yield, taste and effectiveness (potency) has been better with my T5HOs than with the leds I've tested. I have only tried a 300 watt mars hydro and 4000k COBs without supplemental single band LEDs. spectrum may be more important than a 20-30% increase in luminous efficiency. radiant efficiency seems more important and a caloric test is the easiest way to determine that variable.high CRI diodes do not produce anymore heat than low CRI diodes but the difference in actual SPD results in a lower luminous efficiency for these high CRI diodes.however the SPD for these high CRI diodes look closer to the mccree curve so I will be testing them in my grow closet soon.this is a very new technology and we still have a lot to learn about it
