The difference in wattage

Okay so I've been vegging my plants for about two months now under a 400 watt MH. I want to start blooming them in an HPS environment but I'm not sure really how much of a difference it will make if I were to get a 600 watt or a 1000 watt or even sticking with 400 watts. I'm in a closet grow space and I've been told that if you put the lower watt lights closer to the plants you get pretty close to what you need anyways. Someone please put this to rest for me and let me know how this works.

The problem with getting a 1000w in a closet is heat. Too much heat and your plants will die. I would suggest anywhere between 250w-600w for HPS depending on how big your closet is and what the ventilation is like.

Well it's a 5' by 6' with a box fan blowing air in from my bedroom. When the heat is high I just open my window a bit and try to keep it at 75F. I live in Michigan so I have great access to cool air.

watt for watt the 600 is the best bulb but tbh im quite happy with my 400 and as jimmy says the issue with closet grows are heat. i personally had to jump down from 600 to 400 to stabilise temps. im growing 4 in a 5' x 3.5' x 8' closet, there doin very well but its gettin a bit crowded. if uve already got got a 400 ballast that can take hps then id just stick with that but if temps are easy to control and u can afford the extra cash then go for the 600. i wouldnt even look at the 1000, buts just opinion buddy.

Well thanks for the advice. I'm hoping to get like 4-5 oz's per plant will the 600 watt give me what I need? I'm growing chronic btw which yields really high as most yields go.

i was pulling about 3-3.5 with a 600 in soil with organic nutes. the veg time was around 5 weeks. so if u up the vegging then yeah that feasible.

i grew with a 400 for a while b4 i bought my self a 600 watter, and i can tell you the difference is huge! like twice as big/much bud and plants, even the lower buds get quite big with the 600, also i was able to go from a 400 without cooltube to a 600 with cooltube and the temps dropped atleast 5 degrees! also a 600 on 12/12 costs the same in electric as a 400 on 18/6!
