what a cool looking fish, ive caught a green ling once as well as a cabazone.
thats odd he took the spoon. i was out fishing for cod on the bottom once and my buddy hooked into a king salmon off the bottom. we thought it was a shark at first but when it came to surface we knew what it was. only down side was we did not have a net and only a gaffe for the ling so we had to gaffe the fish very strategically

Years ago we lived in Key West.
I'd drive us up US-1 to a spot about 1/4 mile before a particular bridge, my wife would let me out & drive on up to the bridge & fish with our kids while I went "shopping" for dinner with a tickle stick & spear gun. I'd snorkel through the mangrove grabbing bugs & spearing a fish or 3.
I didn't always observe seasons (my bad, I know), but would harvest enough for us to have a beautiful lobster & fresh fish dinner (snook, grouper or snapper).

My eldest son to this day doesn't like Spiny Lobster due to eating so much of it.
