The Flu..

I have been in bed, very ill, for the last few days. I don't know if I have the one killing people right now, but it has been one of the worst of my life. There were quite a few hours I felt barely alive. I hope it was the big one, and I won.

I believe I read most flu death's are from the elderly population, 65 years and older.

The influenza strains I was talking about (like H5N1 - avian flu, or H1N1 "swine" flu, or H1N1 (outbreak 1) Spanish flu.) tended to have lower fatality rates as a virus, but triggered cytokine storms, which were most lethal in healthy adult males. It's why everyone was shitting themselves during the last H1N1; our population centers are 100 fold more dense than they were, we have less rural population, and modern travel makes it probable that, in the event of a catastrophic pandemic, it would have multiple epicenters. If that happened during a weekday, it could devastate closer to 60% of the healthy male population, vs. the 19% it took out in 1918 during the pandemic (the largest representative group of the 3%-6% of the world's population that died.)

That is AWESOME! Seriously. I fuckin' love this. Dude, you realize that we're talkin' about our own lives, right? If making a plant comparison is a viable argumentative device, I think we're kinda' fucked with our value structure, and maybe we should ALL skip the shot this year!

Some of us don't just grow the plant ... we get emotionally involved. cn

The flu is a Virus, antibiotics treat bacterial infections.
Antivirals, vaccines (for prevention) and retrovirals treat virus infections. But, so far only vaccines actually work.
vaccines do not treat viral infections. they have a little bit of the viral infection in them and helps your immune system prepare for if the virus enters your body in a larger amount that can get you sick that is why side effects of the flu shot are feeling sick as if you got a mild flu.

Vaccines are prophylactics, but in special cases (rabies comes to mind) they can be used to treat suspected cases of infection if administered early enough. An immunoglobulin is used as a supplement iirc. cn

In my defense, I said FOR PREVENTION. Technically... I mean, if we really want to be pedantic, preventative measures are considered "treatment" for a lot of things.

At my previous occupation the shot was mandatory unless you were allergic to eggs/products so I got one every year.
9 years ago following a flu shot my father came down ill, soon he was paralyzed and on life support.
Thank God he recovered somewhat (he's still paralyzed from the waist down) and partially in one hand.
The side effects that are glossed over can be very serious.
He was finally diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis due to those very side effects.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, didn't mean to upset you, I just don't see what is wrong with the flu shot and trying to help prevent a long stay in bed feeling like shit. The value structure in America is fucked regardless of flu shots or strains so how does that apply? We are on a marijuana growing site correct? I really don't see why this comparison was so shocking to you.

Not shocking. Funny. Because the implication is that we're quicker to take preventative steps to deal with our plants than ourselves. Didn't upset me, I was dead serious that I think it was an awesome comparison, and very funny! I apologize if ya' took it otherwise.

Never had compulsory shots... I think I'd leave the job before I got a mandatory shot. I refused 'em in prison, never got ill. I do lean on my genetic lotto winnings a LOT more than I should, you're probably right about that.

Never had one. Got the flu 20 years ago haven't since. My wife never had one until her obi/gyn guilted her into getting one. 1 week later boom! Full blown Bell's Palsy at 30 weeks pregnant. Twas a scary time. Not sure if it was the shot but I bet money it was. Never again.
