subbed to this thread. personally, i like the idea of the old school grow. sure i use the latest and greatest techniques, but this is cool to me. keep it simple stupid.

The first pic IS cannabis. You've never seen a set of cotyledons like that before? Every seed grows different... I have a plant named Corky that looked exactly like that, it's a mutant and didn't have shit for leaves until 4 weeks after it sprouted (other members can vouch for me) and it doesn't have a main stem, it has lateral branches straight from the cotyledon node so instead of a single main stem it has 2. dirt put into containers smothers roots. there will be no oxygen once the get watered. the dirt will be hard as a rock it it ever dries out. guess hippys have never heard of the negative effects of soil compaction.

I guess no one has anything growing in their yards. Dude, cannabis is a weed. You're telling me that weeds can't grow in compacted centuries-old dirt? Give me a break. For the record kiddies, quit trying to be smarter than mother nature. She has proven herself in the worst conditions with no added nutrients and absolutely no potting soil, just plain ol' dirt. Back in the day you would find these wonderful weeds on the side of roads growing vigorously amongst the shittiest of substrates.

Edit: I have no problems growing with plain old dirt and neither do the hippies. Water = Hydrogen and Oxygen... no oxygen to the roots?

Just so you know, the Oxygen that actually composes the water molecule isnt actually usable by a plants roots (unless the roots have hydrogen fuel cell technology)...hence the use of a air stone, etc in hydroponics.

Wow sounds simple. Till you realize your gonna end up with low yielding shit weed. Even If you have the best seeds in the world you are still gonna end up with weed that isn't all it could be. Weed was grow this way for years sure. That doesn't mean that science hasn't improved growing. That dirt from outside could be depleted of nutrients. Or it could have a nutrient imbalance from the things growing on or near it leaching specific nutrients out of it. Then there is the pH of the dirt. Was it near a tree? If it was you will almost definitely have a pH issue! Next light. OMG I don't understand you fluorescent people!!! Plants require sunlight. Next to that HID light is the next best thing. Walk outside with a lux meter take a reading then go shove that thing right next to you fluorescent bulb and take a reading. You can put that thing on the bulb and not get a tenth of the lumen's. How can your plant photosynthesize nutrients into simple sugars to consume on a tenth of the light it has been bred over thousands of years to need? Lumen drop off from fluorescent lights is amazing! if any part of the plant is more than a couple of feet ( like 2) it is not getting a quarter of the lumen's you get from right next to the source (which was underpowered to begin with). What about temp and humidity levels. If the temp or humidity levels get to high or to low your plants will close their stoma's stopping them from trans relocating nutrients because they have no way to get rid of their byproducts like oxygen. It is simple the plants can't take up more nutes till they make more room. Back in the 80s I grew in a Phototron. Then I realized that it was a huge underpowered pile of shit. I can say with confidence that if we were handed two clones from the same plant that were in roughly the same health and condition, My modern and more scientific growing practices will yield a much higher quality product with a MUCH greater yield in a shorter time.

Materials:
3 gallon pot per plant
Dirt from outside
Water
4 Ft fluorescent light fixture and bulb
2 cool white for veg*
2 warm white for flowering


Location: Closet of course.


That is all you need. The method begins now.


Get dirt from outside your house. Take grass out and airate it. Put in oven at 350 for about 45 mins. That just killed all the bad stuff.


Fill the pot with the dirt and airate as you fill.


Flood the dirt with WARM water and let it be EXTREMELY wet.


Get lights from anywhere. Walmart,Kmart,Sears etc... There 10-20 bucks depending on where you go.


Install with cool white bulbs 2 FT above pot. Keep them on a 18/6 cycle. Raise lights as needed.


After 2 months switch one bulb out with warm and the following week switch the other with warm.


Switch to 12/12 at this time.


Let flower for 2 1/2 months


Cut off leafes and leave just the bud 3 days before ending flowering


Cut stem but leave bud on the stem and hang upside down for 2 weeks to 1 month


* REMEMBER to water when dirt is dry on top and keep area clean.*

I'm subscribing to this thread as it should be fun to follow. I just want to point out that in college I used both philosophies and used fluoros and HPS/MH. You can produce decent bud using fluorescents (although usually light, fluffy and small), but you can really improve things when using HPS/MH (tight, bulky and mature). You can build a relatively inexpensive set-up if you build your own ballast/ingnitor/light fixture. I spent approximately 70 dollars building a 400 watt HPS. Even if you're a hippy you can get real creative and build items that will improve maturity/yield for your harvest. Just my 2 cents, but still very interested to see some results.

o yea, when it comes to nutes+PH balancing and all this, your talking about being "natural", you dont have to BUY nutes if your SMART. you can make your own, from the same swamp you dug your dirt out of. when it comes to balancing PH you just have to be smart enough to know the general PH of plants in the area, and there nutrient value to fertalizer, mix and add to soil to balance the PH.

wana be natural? make your own food and PH up/down. its not hard........

hehe, this is a good point. your average, everyday outdoor shwag will be BETTER than this weed because of the ammount of light the outdoor weed gets. that should put this method into good prespective..........

im on your side. im using organic hydro nutes(AFF, DR. hornby) in homemade soil (1/3 peat 1/3 verm 1/3 perlite, wormcastings, guano, other poops). i think ima grab some pics......just for the fun of it
