I have seen people say things like 'listen to your plants' or 'the plants will tell you what they need', or something similar, but rarely see further explanation on those statements. I am hoping people can share what they learned in regards to this topic. Things you look for, actions you take when you see it, that type of stuff. Pics would be helpful as well.

ive been hearing this from the beginning of researching how to grow, and its only near the end of my 1st grow do i understand it. this is what i have learned. [note] this may not work for you as this is how my plants talk to me. water. i can tell when they need water before they wilt by the feel of their pots. this is why a good wet/dry schedule is crucial. food. i can tell by how fast they drink the water, or by the hue of their leaves if its time to feed. how much to feed. start small in the beginning gradually going full strength on the nutes listening/watching to see how they respond to full strength and going further if they can handle it. light, heat most plants can only handle high temps for a certain amount of time before they show signs of stress. i know my plants levels because they have told/shown me. thats what i learn from listening to my plants. i hope you have a good relationship with your garden, this creates happy plants and a good finished product.

You are all assuming because I joined in 07', that MUST mean i've been growing since then. I have not. I grew my first plant (of any kind ever) last year. I am not in a friendly state and basically do a plant at a time, which doesn't lend itself to alot of trying different things. I get one shot at it a time. I wish I could have a bunch of plants going so I could try different things which would help me learn much better. Let's not forget, we were all new at this once.

After time you will be able to look at your plants and see if they are lacking something or if you should just leave them alone. Sometimes people forget that they were once newbs too! It will take some time and screwing thing up but you will get it.

Hoenheim, I did see your post and thank you for it. Sorry I forgot to mention it. It gets frustrating when people chirp up with nothing useful in regards to the question at hand. It just isn't necessary or helpful. Nothing like doing a search and thinking you've found what you need, just to see the thread derailed by irrelevant information or people who already seem to know it all who are unwilling to help. Weeding through that gets discouraging to say the least.
