Minimum wage does matter. Without it an employer could very well get away paying someone 3.00 bucks any hour ( without tips).

EDIT: you would never pay anyone $15 because of the sub-minimum..but you can guarantee they will may the equivalent of $15/hour through the sub minimum..you would just make up the difference per hour if they didn't meet the $15..don't you think they make about that?..if i worked a dinner and didn't make $15/hour tips and sub minimum, i wouldn't be serving in that restaurant anymore..non-profits and restaurant were my specialty; they're different payrolls than a regular business.

I don't have any servers, and yes they make tips they don't declare, but no they're not sub minimum. Think ice cream shop or something similar. So no they don't make anywhere near $15 an hour, even after they split whatever tips went in the jar. A few of them probably are close, but I don't even pay my managers that much. Just couldn't run in the black if I did, I'd be negative.

Lol that's about what I made at the restaurant I worked at. Minus tips.

Edit: it's was actually 150 for 2 weeks. Because they taxed as if we made 16 to 18 an hour depending on what room else worked.

The hard part is we don't live in a utopia where people care about eachother. We live in a world that is corrupt. My point being though if you are constantly a revolving door for employees and can never get them to stick around it sounds like a flawed business model and would eventually fail, right?

Maybe not maybe they find people desperate enough or stupid enough i.e. Walmart and continue to work for said company. I have to think that there are still options for these people to get out of walmart. Construction is on the rise again and most contractors pay fairly IME.

restaurants are the worst when it come to losing money due to waste. What type of food do you serve ?

Sorry didn't answer the above... I'm not willing to relinquish my anonymity here but we seat 40, it's a fast casual bakery, and the demographics are middle-upper middle class soccer moms and families just outside of downtown in a well to do suburban area in a great school district.

Well the rules are you are suppose to at least make the FED minimum if you include your tips. If not your employer should be paying you more...by law

I edited above. Our pay checks were less because they pretax ed our tips. I got like 150 per 2 weeks. Which is b's because sometimes we would make less then what the room was taxed at.

But on average we made about 60 a night in tips.plus around 7 an hour

hmmmmm 60 dollars in tips plus making 3 dollars an hour working 8 hours means you make 84 dollars. 84 divided by an 8 hour shift means you make about 10.5 an hour.

you usually don't work an 8 hour shift in restaurant these days..it's more like 4-6 which increases the hourly above..it's hard to get 40 hours in a restaurant though..they cut you loose as soon as business slows after the rush and then keep at 1/2 staff.

i'm just getting at how much extra hourly you'd have to pay to get to $15 x hours worked..how much in payroll would that really be? less than $500 per week?

Hell at 4 hours with 60 dollar tips he is making 18 dollars an hour
 
Don't know where you guys live but around here waiters/waitresses make big money, especially if it's a fine dining restaurant where a typical meal with a few drinks is $80 - 100 for two. My wife insists on tipping 20%.

just maui - grand wailea next to the 4 seasons..love the coffee though and used to buy it organically from one of the farms.

i'm happy you mentioned bernie..i'm just about to write him and scotch tape my $1 tip i made yesterday..all crinkled up, with my fist imprint.

i'm going to include my resume and let him know i can't find work at $130k or $30k..tell him 'god speed' with my dollar..
