They told me at nursery to use foxfarm ocean forest and bushdoctor coco Loco mix 5050 just asking for more input and if I do use this how long before nutrients
Need more information. Do you plan on transplanting? Do you plan to use synthetics?
I'm currently using a ROLS, started off seeds with happy frog, next I'm going to transplant into 1gal 75% happy frog 25% Fox farm ocean forest with a tbsp of fox farm all purpose dry amendment, and for flower it's going to be transplanted into a 5 gallon with only FFOF, perlite, and FF flower dry amendment.
I don't know much about synthetics but this thread is good if you want to layer your mixes.
I have heard that baker’s yeast would work … I personally never tried it. Heard oats in soil works too . Might have to experiment myself. BUT … I have used beer ( even flat beer ) in a compost pile. I also dump out a beer on my compost pile every so often. It seems to help speed things up.
Agreed there trying to ban peat here or cut it heavily its retarded done right peats sustainable and my country has lots of it hell they burn it for fuel on some of the islands up north personally ive never grew in any reduced peat formula compost thats seems as good as peat based stuff imo

Today, Defra (Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs) has confirmed that while some peat-containing products will be banned from shelves in 2027, others will be exempt from a ban until 2030.

Think just England for now but theres been talk of it in Scotland too i hope they dont think just deeper cos it holds carbon back think sphagnum moss is ok
With just ocean forest the rule of thumb is about 30 days, but ive gone longer.
Amending your soil with things like worm castings, alfalfa meal, kelp meal, guano, etc will let you go much longer, unless you plan on doing salts then disregard
I grew up in northern tier US and peat bogs were everywhere and the amount harvested really tiny, I use it with clarity on conscience. Really enjoy working with it inside and out. My mixes are remended and reused indefinitely.
I have used fox farm and IMO it still needs to “cook “ for month or more if possible. I accidentally figured this out when using it straight from the shelf compared to the stuff I stored and let cook.
