The Shack's Outdoor Baby

Hello RIU!! Getting a thread started for my side project, helping a friend grow a single indica from seed outdoors on his patio!! Had a couple freebies that came with my last order, and he was interested in growing his first plant, so I offered up a couple seeds. Both are G13 Labs, a Quicksilver and White Widow.

Started germing one earlier this week, and it cracked today. Transplanted into a jiffy pellet. (the quicksilver, which i hear is an autoflower, which is good for a late start outdoor i figure)

I'll get back to you with some more details as they come, as well as pictures once we have a sprout..

For ease of first grow, planning to go with MG "organic" soil and perlite mix. It's his first grow and he can be forgetful and i think the time released fertilizer in the soil will give just enough for him to have a successful outdoor harvest.

Anyone ever go G13 Labs Quicksilver? (esp. outdoor?)

I checked with my bro.. i didn't realize.. we're planting straight into the urf! better known as earth. i thought it was going potted on the patio..

we'll be turning in some sort of top soil and the area is already mulched, and here in texas, mulch is a must for growing anything. just regular hardwood mulch...

anyhow, waiting for it to sprout.. then going into a little nursery pot to build a root system.. then going in the ground!!

she's about 2 1/2 inches tall now, and it the sun in a little beer drinking cup of soil. going strong!!

my brother had an interesting idea.. there is a compost pile near by.. it is a fairly rich mix.. he is considering dumping a bag of top soil in the bin, mixing it up.. letting it sit for about a week or two, and planting directly in the compost!! it already has chicken wire wrapped around the bin, so it has deer protection.

anyone have thoughts on growing this way?? tried it??

I've never planted in a compost pile before but I think it's a great idea. A nice pile of rich organic compost with built in protection from pests....as long as it gets a good amount of sun then it sounds perfect. Good luck!

i had my doubts at first when he mentioned it.. i was thinking since it is raised and the edges of the soil/compost bed would be exposed that the roots would grow out and dry rot.. but then i realized the compost pile is set up directly on the soil.. so that top layer, where earth meets pile is some REALLY rich top soil, and the roots will just grow straight down.

also it will have a very healthy upper root zone where bagged top soil meets organic compost material.

any other additions to the mix? perlite? vermiculite? anything??

It woudn't hurt to add perlite or vermiculte but I think they'd be fine without it. Depending on the size of the compost pile you'd need a shitload of additives for them to make much of a difference. What are you using for nutes?

haven't really considered nutes.. my first step into outdoor, and i'm more of a proxy here, its actually my brothers grow.. he dug what was going on in the closet and cab, and wanted something outdoor...

i'm thinking if we start with compost and rich top soil, nutrients or fertilizers won't be a concern until flower.

what would you recommend kind sir?

I'm thinking you're on the right track. That rich fertile pile of compost should see you through veg, then you can give them some help with flowering. Since you're going all organic your soil you might want to stick with an organic flowering fertilizer. Maybe some bone meal or bat guano if you can get your hands on it. Then in a few months you and your bro can sit back and smoke some 100% organic herb.

Wow 2 1/2 inches in 4 days, nice. Where the pics at my friend? I would love to see the progress. I think outdoor plants look a lot sexier.

no pics yet, haven't gone out to the country visit in a few days.. AND!! sad truth is, he can't make up his mind about location..

thought we were settled on the compost bin, seemed like a KILLER idea.. now he's having concerns about security/stealth.

i laughed at first, but at least he is thinking.. there is a large field of grass that is around 2 - 2 1/2 feet tall. long story short, 5 gal bucket in this field, with grass "glued" or attached by some means to the bucket to disguise it.. haha..

how do i convince him to just grow it in the compost bin?? haha, only teasing.. but i will try to get some pictures soon, its sitting in a beer drinking cup (the red plastic ones we all know and love from keggers) with a bit of moisture control potting soil, not ferts/nutes in the soil so we're still technically organic!!

talked to him earlier today and the first true leaves are showing their tips next to the baby round leaves.. awesome!

the concerns for stealth are well founded. it is in the sticks, but there maybe 1 or 2 neighbors of concern. most people keep to themselves though. we're probably the only ones to wander around out there, mostly rich assholes. i'm really thinking against potting it, although about 6 inches to 1 foot into the soil you hit rock, which is why the compost bin was appealing, and well surrounded by tall cedars (which we expect to lend an interesting note to the final smoke)

Does anyone have info on the Quicksilver strain from G 13 Labs? I'm curious about height for this girl, hoping it's strong in the ruderalis department, so it will stay short, aiding in stealth. I know there is some sativa in the strain which means compact, but also some indica which means stretch.. my hope is the sativa was for size and the inidica for bud production.. but I don't know the breeders intent with the strain.

The ruderalis background has me convinced she will be reasonably compact. Even in a 5 gal bucket adding about a foot or so in height, she remain low and reasonably out of most random onlookers line of sight.

Oh man........I was looking forward to watching that girl grow up in a pile of compost. I'm shattered. Please ask your bro to re-consider.

Just kiddin....I'd rather see him end up with a successful grow than with his neighbours calling the cops on him.

It just sounded so perfect.

still figuring out a final destination for the young girl.. she will most likely end up in a pot on the patio, and be carefully moved around for stealth purposes as needed. growing VERY well at this point. cute little seedling still, got a crappy pic from my phone uploaded. the true leaves are a little bigger at this point. all in all, doing very well so far in this hot Texas, summer sun!!

oh and i'm new to soil (for cannabis growth) if the first true leaves are about double the size as you see in the photo.. when should i add 1/4 strength nutrient/fertilizer? another week? still looks young, but looking to get this girl growing soon. 12 hour sun starts late september according to the Gardening Almanac for our area.

Hey Shack, I may be all wet, but I always thought pure Sativa's were the giant stretchy type with slender delicate fan leaves & Indica's were more squaty & compact with the huge fan leaves. I realise that when you start crossing
I & S, you will get many characteristics of both. Anyway Bud, thats the way they grow in my garden. The compost pile sounds like a great idea. Too late for this season, but for stealth, you could surround it with bamboo or pampus grass.
But foremost, get this girl growing! Time's a wasting, we're burning daylight! lol
Good luck & good grow.......BB

Thanks for the words burger boss! Stick around she's still growing. The late start was somewhat strategic. This way she doesn't have the opportunity to grow huge and less stealthy. We have plenty of time left in the growing season. At least 60 days which should be sufficient. Planning to top often keep it relatively compact. ( I hope like i said before I'm just advising a friends grow using RIU to obain advice for his grow) Also she's an autoflowering strain, so the biggest concern is the coming fall, which in our area isn't until mid-October.

Now for some update, mixed up 1/4 strength flora nova nutrient with floralicous grow and shot of superthrive. Keeping it in a gallon jug and sending him home with a little bottle of it as he needs it. As soon as we hit a first or second node she's getting a larger final pot, chillin on the patio.

All for now!!
