I actually need to buy soil as well... debating going with a soil-less mix instead. Which would be easier in terms of controlling nutrients?
I think it's personal preference. Some people like to use Fox Farm Ocean Forest because it "carries" them through veg. To me, that seems confusing, not knowing what's available to the plant. I prefer a soil with low nutrient content and giving nutrients each watering. To me, that's less ambiguous, I'm "resetting" the plate each time (with 20% runoff, pushing out some unused, replacing with a fresh balance). No guesswork about how much food is in the soil versus what I need to add/give/supplement.
If you want a soil that should carry you all the way through, with little supplementing (maybe a "tea" here and there), @uwine99
described an organic/amended soil that doesn't require the typical 3-4 month "cooking" of organic soils. And, updated that recipe
here.
You said soilless. That would be Pro-Mix HP by itself (or growing in coco, or straight perlite). I think you're supposed to use hydro nutrients with an organically inactive medium like that. (I used GH Flora 3-part). MiracleGro Tomato or Jack's Classic should be ok (but I would add dolomite to Pro-Mix HP).
What I use is in my sig. It's a very light soil. Basically, soilless with a little soil added. Seems like the best of both worlds.
