The "turning cheap nutes into killer weed" experiment

I have surfed around rollitup and other boards looking for information on growing with miracle grow and other cheap ferts. I really haven't found much info, and was disappointed with what I did find. My goal is really just to grow some good weed on the cheap. I am getting tired of paying huge money for nutes and simple carb products that never really seem to do what is advertised. So I figured an experiment was in order:)

I'm going to grow in soil. I'm going to veg my plants with a fert higher in N, probably 25-10-10 or so, but I might just use 20-20-20. My plants only get 1-2 weeks of veg anyways. Then I'm thinking 15-30-15 for the first 2 weeks of flower, and then 10-52-10 until finish. Keep the nutes at 1000-1200 ppm, and then add sucanat every other flowering and always during flush. Flush them like a mofo because I don't want to taste cheap nutes. I might add some calmax or vitaboost during flowering, and maybe some superthrive during veg.

I have several strains that I can use, green bud and mendo madness clones, and I have some NL#5 and NLxhaze also. I'm thinking abouut a more indica dominant strain, but I honestly have no idea what to expect. I will probably go with a strain called Mama Mia by Seedsman.

Does anybody have any advice before I start? I know some of you will think I am just going to waste electricity, but I have read enough positives about using cheaper nutes that I thought I would try it. Most of the people that get nute burn seem to be just measuring using the trademark "miracle grow double scoop", and I plan on measuring my nutes to 800 ppm for veg and no more than 1200 ppm during flowering. Hopefully the soil and calmax will make up for any nutrient deficiencies I might encounter.

I'm going to go and smoke a bowl and give this idea the deep thought it really deserves. I would really like to develop a clean, cheap, simple and easy way to feed my plants. My room right now is retarded - big bud, bud blood, kool bloom, carbo max, molasses, sensi grow/bloom, fulvic/humic, nirvana, bud candy - I'm like a little kid at a candy store when I go to the growshop. Don't smoke weed and go to your hydro store - it's like when you go for groceries and come out with twinkies and a slurpee.

I will turn this into a grow journal when things start looking more interesting than green cups with dirt in them/clones in a tray. Maybe you guys can advise me on a strain to use? Sorry to the mods if this is in the wrong place, feel free to move it and I will go sit in the corner.

Any of these fertilizers will grow well if you don't exceed the rates and frequency. The houseplant rates of 1 tsp/gal is the rate to use. It sounds like you know how to figure PPM, if not here is the breakdown for the ferts you listed: This is for 1 tsp/gal

20-20-20= 260ppm N, 260ppm P, 260ppm K for 781ppm total
25-10-10= 325ppm N,130ppm P, 130ppm K for 585ppm total
15-30-15= 195ppm N, 390ppm P, 195ppm K for 780ppm total
10-52-10= 130ppm N, 677ppmP, 130ppm K for 937 ppm total

This is a pretty good balance of fertilizers and with the addition of epsom or cal mag and any other minor elements missing from your choice of ferts this will grow good plants for a very small amount of money and your ppm will be in a good range as the plant matures to finish. If it sounds like Super Sasquatch Scat, it probably is. Any well balanced fertilizer will grow good plants.

When using these water soluble fertilizers I stop feeding 2 weeks before harvest and finish with clear water and get no chemical flavors in the flowers.

Right on, thanks a lot pointswest.

Do you just use epsom salts, or do you use a calcium supplement as well?
The nutes I'm using are from a company called Plant Prod. The 15-30-15 and 10-52-10 break down the same (except for the P):
Total Nitrogen (N) 10%
Available Phosphoric Acid (P2O5) 52%
Soluble Potash (K2O) 10%
Boron (actual) (B) 0.02%
Chelated copper (actual) (Cu) 0.05%
Chelated iron (actual) (Fe) 0.1%
Chelated manganese (actual) (Fe) 0.05%
Molybdenum (actual) (Mo) 0.0005%
Chelated zinc (actual) (Zn) 0.05%
EDTA (ethylene diamine tetraacetate (chelating agent) 1.0%

So I'm thinking I'll add some calcium and magnesium, and then look for deficiencies. Can I ask what you use, and if you encounter any ph problems?

Thanks for your help so far...

I just realized there is another sub forum for grow journals. I think I will start a new thread in there with some pictures soon. Then I can live in infamy when people do a google search for "weed+miracle+grow". First this, then world domination.

Yeah, I went a little crazy too when I first saw how many nutes were available at my local grow shop. But once you get a few grows under your belt, you start to see what works for you and what actually works.

I like the AN lineup, but I don't use all of those products they sell. That would be overkill for my goals.

However, using the cheapest nutes possible sounds like a plan that's going to cause more troubles. I mean, they're cheap for a reason.

I thought that Miracle Gro was just for potted plants, not for things that you eat or that you would smoke. That's what I was reading on another board somewhere yesterday. I mean, aren't the cheap nutes just filled with horrible chemicals that make the smoke dangerous too? I thought the point of smoking weed was to have fun without having any dangers to it?

Now, while I'm not going to grow organic any time soon, I think sticking with nutes that are for weed growing. Not nutes that are for something altogether.

I get the idea about wanting to do things cheap - but I think it's about growing smarter, not growing cheaper.

Miracle makes A fert for vegetables that are MEANT to be ate....a chem fert is a chem fert IMHO
but yes I understand the whole organic thing and can pretty much say from my findings that natural ferts and additives will give the BEST results. Period. But hey there's many ways to do these things, to each his own ya know you try and you learn

interesting whats goin on with this? Im using some miracle grow in a pinch right now 15-30-15 for some more N for veg seeing as its a generalized water soluable fert. Its the blue stuff they sell. It seems to be working just fine i got no problems using it for veg but for me personally i like to use AN or GH or something completely organic alltogether if im growing in soil.
