The Widow, from seed.

Hi all, i've got 2 widow seeds, which have just broke outta the soil. They're both potted with multi-purpose compost mixed with perlite. They're in a triangle room in the corner of my garage which is 850mmx850mmx1400mm and 1500mm tall.
At the minute there is 2 2ft cool white fluorescents and 2 6400k CFLs jus 2-3 inchs above them. This don't make up alot of watts but about 5000 lumens. .
I do have a 400w hps to put over them but was wondering how far above them to hang it due to height restriction?? and heat. do i just go for the "hold your hand to see if it burns" trick??

Would it be a good idea to keep them under the flo's for 2-3 week then get the HPS above them to finish off the veg before puttin them into flowering?

Any help for a newbie would be really appreciated.
Thanks people :-P

I am a newbie as well but I know that HPS is better for flowering and metal halide is better for seedling and veg, but personally i just used an HPS the whole growth. As for the heat I just use my hand and check the top leaves for heat stress everyday if I'm worried. Hope that helped a little

Ah cool. Thanks for the fast reply :) So do u think i'd be better off just using the HPS for the whole grow rather than the CFL's?? People seem to rate the CFL's for vegging pretty highly.

Did you end up with a decent yeild using your HPS??

in the 3rd week of flowering my man so I can't speek with experience but I have these pics from today (18 days). Never had a high opinion on CFLs but thats just me. HPS has better lumens per watt which means better yield and quality bud (I use 150W HPS per 2x2 ft.). Started using molasses today as well so hopefully that will up me yield as well. From newbie to newbie I wish you good luck

Got widow in my collection atm. I only use cfl for cloning. Once the ladies take footing, i switch to 400hps at about 24". within about 7-10 days of transplant, I lower to 12" and thus it remains until flowering. No need to push the limits on your 400w. It will do wonderfully for your ladies as long as you're not over 18" above, or getting them hot. Flowering is when you go big guns, I use a 1000w on a mover myself. Ive tried MH, HPS, CLF all those at many different wattages. Im sticking to HPS full grow. I keep my moms alive under (2) 100W hps's. Compared to the floro tubes i tried, NIGHT and DAY!

Hope I helped. best of luck to ya!:leaf:

It'd be good to keep in touch to find out how ur widow turns out then. How far along is it?

I think i'll wait til i get my contactor then before i put the 400 in then. They've ony just touched the surface so it'll only be 3 or 4 days til they get all them glorious lumens :)

Thanks for posting people. Its handy to have a few extra brains on something like this for a first timer.
