It looks like a Screech-Owl.
If you are in southern AZ, it could be a Whiskered Screech-Owl.
Otherwise it could be either an Eastern or Western Screech-Owl depending on your location. All three are real similar, the only way to know for sure is to ID its call.
 
At least your animal was real, i woke up the other night an looked outside, freaked.. i thought it was a big coyote... rubbed my eyes put the weed down and looked again. it was the neighbors mechanical reindeer. i felt like a real man after that.
