Thermometer/Hygrometer placement.

Hey guys quick question about where i should place my gauges. Most pictures and posts i read show their gauges under the lights at plant level. However i have just read an article saying you shouldnt place you're gauges directly under the light and should always be placed in the shade because radial temp is different to air temp. It says that air temp is whats most important and if you place your gauge directly under the lights it will give you a mis-guided reading due to the radial heat coming from the lights. Only place there is any shade in my tent with lights on is above the lights. What are you're thoughts on this? Any info and advice greatly appreciated as always. Thanks.

IMO I put them down by my pots for the temps and up about halfway up the wall for hydro. Been using that system for a very longtime and have not had any issues, you have to remember your ladies are under the light and that is where they receive their heat from, But i have always kept two of each in my room, in different areas. I get what you are saying bear and im sure just about all growers do it the same as you. I hear its best to have multiple gauges in different places around the grow area but im working with one. But from what i read from that article the radial heat ( the reading you are getting when placed directly under the light) isnt as important as the reading you get in the shade (Actual room temp). Much like the the temp readings you get in your car, when the car is stood and in direct sun light it will show it to be much hotter then the actual temp outside only when the car moves through the air do you get an actual temp . I tested this with my work van not long ago on a very hot day actual temps according to news and such was 32 degrees but when my van was sat in direct light it was showing 40 degrees plus only when i drove my van and got it moving the temp changed on the read out to the 32 degrees it actually was thats because he temp gauge is reading air temp when on the move and measuring radial when stood. Ill try get the link for the article i was reading see what you think. Again i am in no way saying you are wrong or anyone is wrong or right for that matter just saying its worth a read.

Notice the point made about radiant heat not being that much of an issue. Only posting about this because all those people who are worried there temps are too high may infact be worried for no reason i know i shit bricks when i saw that my temps went slightly above recommended temps but like it states there so long as you have good air flow n such you shouldnt worry too much about what the radial temp is and just make sure you room/air temps are in check. Again im not saying anybody is right or wrong but i found this very helpful.

Either way i think best bet is to have more than 1 temp gauge within the grow area to get a more complete idea of what you're working with. May invest in a couple more temp/humidity gauges i think.

The more i think about the premise of the article the more it makes sense. Think about it and how temps affect us for example a day that is say 30 degrees with no wind snd the air still feels much hotter than a day thats say 34 degrees with alot of wind im not saying plants react in the same way we do but it does deserve a thought. Atm my temp gauge displays 28 degrees when in the shade but put it under the light at pot level it will show 30-32 degrees but my plants are growing very well and are not displaying any kind of stress what so ever. Think i will continue my research into the matter.

Been trying to drill this idea into folks minds for ages mate. You would think it would be common knowledge like ph, watering and ventilation. But apparently its not.
Above the light line and out of direct light, If its the same article I have linked several times it states plants can handle radiant temps of up to 50 degrees C. Clearly that's a big difference from air temps ideals..

There's a new guy every day asking why his temps are so high.... Must be one of those bits of common sense that's been lost to many.

Just a thought on your first post, placing them above the light is also not ideal due to the amount of heat rising. You can place them anywhere below the light line if you like but put a piece of white card shading them from the direct light.

Ahh i hadnt thought of shading the gauge myself only where shade already existed thanks man great idea. And yeah i figured i couldnt be the first person to stumble across this information regarding proper temp readings. I learn something new everyday when i started my first grow 27 days ago i didnt anticipate me becoming so into it if ya get what i mean, buts its become my favourite thing a perfect hobby if you will and i pretty much do nothing but read up and research anything and everything to do with the cultivation of cannabis. I love it haha

Very rewarding indeed. Ive always wanted to grow my own supply but for the most part circumstance has never really allowed it...its strange that after 1 night (heavily blazed) around 3 months ago i decided. Fuck it im doing it. I began reading up on everything MJ related from growing techniques to strains i ate info on it like it was a drug after a month or so of study i felt i had at least enough knowledge to make a start so i began gathering and sourcing all i would need but all the info and reading in the world couldnt prepare me for the hurdles i would face. Heat, humidity, nutrients, soil, filters, watering the list goes on. But im glad i stuck at it even if most solutions just came with more problems. Im only 27 days in but its a massive part of my life now and like you said yeah its crazy how it takes hold haha
