My opinion is this plant is way to tall and it needs to go in the ground or it will continue to get root bound and there will be problems with watering. Also when it starts to bud the Center of gravity is going to be really high and it’s gonna be a lot easier to keep this plant standing with it in the ground. Obviously nobody wants to dig a hole in their grass but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do for these amazing plants. Personally outdoor I feel belongs in the ground. You can cook roots in a pot......watering is usually better in the ground. Unless they need to be moved around.
 
Can you purchase a 15 or 30g smart pot so you don’t need a hole ?

id be more concerned about the medium than in ground versus not in ground.

the OP has a nice plat of grass I’m just trying to preserve it as much as possible haha. If it was me I’d say be gone with the grass!

Organic NO TILL soil bed right there would be a beauty

Things need to be redistributed more evenly.

LOL and he is technically putting "grass" back
 
This would be a nice spot for a garden bed or maybe just be lazy and put grass back down after transplanting. This plant just went through 2 week long heat wave so the grass is mostly gone anyway.
Believe it or not I posted cause this morning this plant was laying on the ground. Luckily there wasn’t any bad damage

Yeah that was just something quick I found but there is other info out there. It was just an observation I had on my vegie garden and looked into it. Roots love oxygen the more the better!

That sucks! You're still going to need to stake that thing big time. Or your buds will snap some branches.
