Whats up everyone? Hope everyone had a good one!

I'm lookin for a bow to start hunting. I really am favoring longbows and recurves. Any one have any experience with any type of longbow or recurve? If so what should I look for when doing research about these style of bows? I dont know a whole lot about bows but I want to learn. I want to make a good choice when buying a bow...but reviews from strangers arent credible as much as RIUers' lol!:bigjoint::leaf:

Please help if you have time:weed:

hunting for raw meat unprocessed to eat not for fun is not a bad thing if your a vegan or vegitarian then yah its wrong but i personally feel that meat is essential to a diet although not the only thing you need to eat but def essential but if it makes you happy i hunt for 3 deer a year and i use all of the meat i even cook the heart and liver in onions and gravy greattttttttttttt stuff for your body and tasty to :D

Yeah I def plan on using every bit of it. And I wont be going for sport, I'll enjoy it a ton, but it will not be a game. I love deer meat. Steaks sausage jerky!

But what bow to use? I am looking for something lightweight and quiet. But stong and durable.

he said it was a 50 pound drawback?

you wanna dish out on a nice bow? or just a starter? get a cheap compound to start with and learn your draw weights a good investment on your finger is this... http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3982226&cp=2367438.2367824.2293465
That is sick! I like the fingerings, looks like it would fit perfect on my hand! +1:bigjoint:

for sure recurves are ROUGH on your arm though compounds allow for the same amount of draw weight with out the kill of having to bend a peice of wood to 50 pounds of pressure just a thought

keep in mind recurve bows are shot by instinct, compound bows have sights, its much easier to shoot a compound bow than a recurve.when you draw back a 50 pound recurve your holding 50 lbs.compound bows have a letoff,my compound is set for 70 lbs when i draw it back im only holding 30 lbs.hope this helps,if you can find a shop that only sells bows, they most likely can tell you what you need to know.they may even have some good used bows.any more questions let me know ill see if i can help you out iv been shooting recurves and compounds for a while.

Also Agreed, the best place to buy your first is to find a bow hunting shop, they should be plenty in the mid west. The guys in there will be able to set you up with a bow that is going to fit properly, have the right draw length, draw weight. Also I would recommend a compound over a recurve, if you are hunting its just more practical, don't be afraid of technology, your not Robin Hood but believe me if he had acess to a 70-40 compound with a balance bar and drop point sights he would have. Recurves are also notorius for giving you a slap on the arm so heads up for that as well. Also your arrows need to be cominserate with your bow choice, meaning wood arrows and a high power bow = arm and face full of splinters.

I use a HOYT Turbohawk compound bow 60 lbs. 27in draw. Group 3 inches at 50 yards. I went opening day of early archery Sat. Didn't see shit. Ant type of bow will work, but the main difference is that the compounds have let-off so when you are at full draw your not holding all the poundage like you do with recurve or long bows. I had rotator surgery so a recurve or long bow would be ok for targets but if hunting and you go to full draw but cant shoot until the deer gets into position, broadside, its hard to hold very long. With compounds you can hold all day because of the let-off. Really depends on preference. Good luck. PM me if you need further help.

lol yah again i love recurves i reallllly do but totatly not practical for hunting a good compound and a good hand release and you wont have any problems ill say this though using my recurve is a work out but i love it mainly for the robin hood aesthetics as ak was saying lol

Its already been said, but here's my .02C.
Go to an archery shop - ask questions, let them measure your draw length & listen to the suggestions that they have. Try a few different bows to get a feel how each style shoots.
For me the compound was the way to go even though I also shoot instinctive. The sights & release make for much better arrow placement.
Go gettem tiger.

that second one is sweet bro... and dont worry about draw weight on it too much... until you get used to how a real bow shoots, you'll probably only be pulling 25--35lbs anyway. The draw weight feels dramatically different than that of a compound bow with the same specs.

I was very scared of that...the whole splinter and slap on the arm. Lol at the robin hood joke...I wish I was!

That Bear looks perfect!

There is a place called Hook Line and Sinker 5 miles from the house and its also full archery with a range and everything. i go in there for my tackle things, but I always go look. I'm gonna go down today maybe and see what all they say.
