you wanna be a couple weeks old before you hit em with that much light. 24/0 under some cfls works great and saves on power

You can but i wouldnt advise it.. if you do then put the light about 2 meteres away from the plants surface..
i had my little seedling raise from the ground yesterday.. put it by the window let it get sun or even a 60 watt fluro bulb hung from the celing will do the trick.. after a week or two pop them under the 400. wait until it has its first 4 sets of leaves.

helllo? how far is the sun? and how far is the bulb from the plant?
bulb temperature can kill a baby seedling... why? how? impossible? whatever.
once they have there first 4 sets of leaves i put them under.. thats the way i do it anyway because i was told they dont like intense light.

either will work but seedlings can be a little sensitive sometimes. because of their sensitivity i prefer to start them under cfls, really close, just till you get like two sets of true leaves then hit em with the 400. everyones opinions are different man. some are kinda assholes in sayin it and some arent.

48w Flows = $5 a mo., 400w = $25. If you're single with a job the more intense bulb would be my choice since you'll get like a grand worth of weed. If your wife is passive to a point the flows work great & won't dry things out so quick.
Not knowing your set-up - the little flow strips fit under a desk or back of a closet, keeping 400w in flower full time, pulling ripe ones every month.

I have this debate with my friend all the time. He is insistent that I give my plants too much light with my HIDs and I will burn them. I have heard there can be some light sensitivity for seedling and clones and have not ventured to test other wise, but is there ever another case of too much light? Obviously I make sure there is a safe distance to avoid any kind of excessive heat. He does an 8000w grow but keeps his lights like 4 feet above his canopy. I like mine down like 1.5 - 2 feet above. Air cooled and can tocuh the glass without burning my hand. Any flaw he finds on any of my leaves he says is a burn. Room temps and humidity controlled.

It really is just a matter of cost, You can burn those 400watts if you want but you dont need to, using CFL's will suffice, then again you will also have to go buy the CFL's and lamps to do that, so it might work out about even in the short term.
What I want to know is can you give a healthy plant too much light? I dont mean too much heat I mean light. And if so what does this look like? Is there a point at which more light will not= more yeild, and if so what is this point? I can burn as much light as I want but I have only a small space to grow in, so I want to max my yeild per square foot, not worried about GPW

take it easy on the carbon consumption, please........cfls; to germ-seedling, at least. i like them all the way thru. very efficient up close. up close, being key. they burn coal and oil to make that electricity, ya know? even if cost is not a driving factor......

Since when is a cfl more efficient than an HID? What if I want to do 100 seedlings. How much of my 1000w MH can I give them before it's too much?

Seedlings wasn't really my point actually. I didn't want to try and refute seedling sensitivity to extreme light or inefficiency of using HIDs for small plants, which I do not necessarily agree with, but I veg with a 1000w MH. Was gonna upgrade to 2 but got a mover instead. I might put 2 VHO t5s on it for shits and giggles. I'm talking more middle to late veg, and flower.

How hard do we really want to push them in veg. My vote is aprox. 18 - 24" for veg & 12 - 18" for the hsp in flower with a 400w. Too close & it will start to degrade the plant & you can see it.
I bet the right answer is......depends on the bulb, the strain, the grower, ect.

so...does the # of cfl's matter in respect to the distance over the seedling? For instance, I have a seedling that just sprouted yesterday and I have it about 4-5" away from 6 cfl's.
