To top, or not to top?

I'm on my first go round, and I started with an old grow book, almost as old as I am. It says you should 'top' your plants from the middle stalk to cause your plant to be more bushy. Is it true? Or did I cause damage. These pics are only of the ones I topped. The book says ones the growth from where you topped has 4 'brachings' of leaves, you should do the same to that 'sprout'. This website says if you top your plant, your cutting off the most potent part of the plant. Well, if you cause your plant to have 2 tops instead of one, isn't that better? The nutrients have to go somewhere. What do you think?
I topped all but one of my plants before I found this site, and I left the last one alone just because I want to see the difference. I actually like the effect it has had. It's keeping them short, and I seem to have a lot of even growth.

Thanks. :)~

So I heard a little more about the FIM technique. All I could catch was you leave about 20% of the growth still in tact. What exactly is the FIM technique? How do you do it? I have one left, and I'd like to try that. :D

I've tried it on my recent crop this year, and it works wonders. you grow extra branches, and you don't stunt the growth of the plant at all. it takes about 2 days for the plant to recover, but the results are well worth it with extra branches to have a bigger yield with.

If you push the leaves apart at the very top of the plant you should see a small bud (not flowering bud but an actually leaf bud). Use a pair of nail clippers to pinch off about 3/4 of the bud. This should result in more than two top colas being developed.

try a search on google, you can get a lot more info on the net.

peace
