Too stingy to buy harpin, what about chitin or chitosan

I'd like to try applying some kind of harpin protein, based on success I've had with other plants. However, I ran through my supply of Messenger (now defunct, replaced by a new product that is supposed to attach to more receptor sites), so I need to find another source. But I'm thinking, why pay all that money if I can get some crab-shell or shrimp-shell powder that will do the same thing for a lot cheaper. Chitosan is available in caps from drugstores, taken for nail health and cholesterol reduction, I believe. Just wondering if anyone had tried this and has any recommendations. Thanks.:dunce:
