topping question

I was just wondering if anyone has tried this before, and if so can you tell me how it turned out. Can you grow a plant to like 10 inches then top it but take off like 3 or 4 inches from the top of the plant, then dip it in a rooting hormone and basically clone the plant from topping it instead of just the very top of the plant. thanks

Never tried. In theory it will work, however, the higher up on the plant, the less hormones. So, the chances of it rooting are less. If you use a good rooting compound, there shouldn't be a problem.

Yes I believe you can do this. Search Uncle Ben's topping techinique. He waits for the plant to get quite a few nodes and cuts it just above the second node which gives him a plant with 4 main colas instead of the regular two you get from topping the newest node. Since you cut of 3 or 4 nodes above that, he says you can just use this as a clone, I kinda want to do it but I'm afraid of ruining one of my babies if the clone dies. Then again atleast Id still have the plant with 4 colas...

That makes sense, thanks a lot. I think I will try that now, but I’m cheap and I only have this rooting powder from Wal-Mart haha

thats exactly what i do with plants i want to top, and have had 100% success so far on them. grow them up to 6 nodes (about 8 inches tall) cut them back to the 2nd or 3rd node and then use the top as a clone in rockwool. mine took root in 4 days and was standing up and perky in 6.

its a method that a pal of mine uses with success. your lateral maristems will eventually fill the void left there.
