Dutch to ban foreigners from pot shops

The Netherlands plans to ban foreigners from the country's famed pot shops, a decision Amsterdam's tourism industry hopes goes up in smoke.
The Dutch Cabinet late last month said the measure was needed to "reduce nuisance and drugs tourism," arguing that "substance use of minors has to be countered more strongly and that coffee shops have grown into large points of sale of cannabis that are hard to manage."
Known as the "Weed Pass," the measure will turn coffee shops into private clubs for Dutch citizens over the age of 18. The memberships will last for a minimum of a year, and each shop will have a capped number of members.

"Persons who do not hold Dutch citizenship will not have access to the coffee shops," the Dutch Ministry of Security and Justice said in a statement.
"The Cabinet expects that closure of coffee shops to foreign drugs tourists will ensure that they no longer travel to the Netherlands to purchase and consume cannabis. After all, many of them can use the illegal markets available in their immediate surroundings," it says.
The government said the measure also is needed to crack down on drug trafficking near the borders with Germany and Belgium. "The number of criminal organizations that will be dealt with will be doubled from 20 to 40%," the Ministry of Security and Justice said in its statement.
But even in announcing the tougher stand, the government said Dutch drug use has "remained more or less stable in the past decade."
Under the current plan, the measure will go into effect this year in the southern part of the country, and then for the rest of the country in 2012.
The city of Amsterdam, including its mayor, has vowed to fight the measure.
"The Dutch government has decided upon this for the whole of the Netherlands. Amsterdam doesn't want it," said Machteld Ligtvoet, a spokeswoman for the Amsterdam Tourism & Convention Board.
Ligtvoet added, "Coffee shops are not actively promoted by our organization and are not used in order to attract tourists. However, the mere idea that one can buy and use soft drugs here is an attractive aspect of Amsterdam and its famous spirit of freedom."
The Amsterdam Tourism & Convention Board says the new measure should be dismissed because it discriminates against foreigners. The board also says it fears "soft drugs will be sold on the street again, leading to more crime and dangerous situations."

Mr I Can Do That For Half
This is an old story. Its being fought and currently is only endorsed by towns who made it a village ordenance and not fully enforced inland. The govis trying to do it at request to neighboring countries like Germany since those folks come over buy and then transport to countries who prohibit it. I assume it will be overturned as the country can not afford to loose billions in tourism each year.

Maybe this will put more pressure on the surrounding countries to decriminalize more. Folks should be able to smoke where they live.

It is in place in Limburg and it's already being resisted by some coffeeshops in other southern towns. 100+ people have already regsitered unemployed from the coffeeshops (horeca industry) affected. Nice eh!!!

It Will never happen in Amsterdam.

Anyone who is anti-dam, has obviously never been. Its such an old and beautiful city that was unspoiled by bombing in WW2. If you go to Rotterdam, just a 30min train ride away, there is little old arcitecture left - it was carpet-bombed. Very sad. Also you cant underestimate the amazing atmosphere of a casual cannabis-cafe. In places like Rotterdam its common for it to be more like a club with pool tables and cups of tea. You meet some real characters in there aswell.

I'm surprised the sale of seeds wasn't part of the measure. Not OK to sell to foreigners there, but OK to sell seeds around the world....not that I want anything to change :)

.......................this is the kind of thing that makes me not take the law seriously..............if they actually knew what it did ( which they probably do but would hurt the pockets of political ivestors ) they would be singing a different tune. if anything make it more legal, all they are doing is making more criminals for the justice machine numbers ( fresh meat + grinder ) ;)

Indeed, the whole City Centre of Amsterdam is actually a National Historic Monument (makes getting anything done to your house pretty difficult!). There has been weed and hash cafes here for centuries, I honestly do not see that stopping.

They are also trying to put restrcitions on seeds companies. They are also looking to put restrictions on people selling nutrients, grow equipment, etc. So if you seel equipment that is later used for criminal pupropses they can come after you. I mean it is totally ridiculous.
They are looking or suggesting that seed companies can only sell 5 seeds to a customer (because 5 plants is the legal limit). The list of insanity probably goes on.

Part of the reasoning behind this is that the right (Christian Democratic Party) is in power and they want to rid the country of all Leftist Socialist behaviour which includes the right for people to get high. If they had there way it would be eradicated completely.
