Training Different Strains

I'd like to invite a discussion on the best training methods for different plants.

For example, I've seen GDP so dense with nodes you wouldn't want to top it, whereas an OG isn't going to do as well in a SOG setup.

What have been your experiences with different strains and their 'preferred' training?

i'm liking the idea of SCROGging, but never got to it when i didn't give my gals any stretch time and when i topped & trimmed up standard scrog style, my plants put all of their energy into making seeds. i decided on the tech because it encourages top cola growth from everything as well as using the most light & filling the most space. i chose the tech after reading it's the best for mixed strain grows as it evens the tops. that, and it's ideally suited to growing tree sized sativas indoors.

i'm not going to do much pruning the next time i try it. i'll let my screens overgrow and if i do pruning, it will be for bud. i was never comfortable with the prune everything under the screen and keep pruning the tops too method. i always intended to keep the longest flowering strains in the center with access to the faster strains on the sides. it would get complicated keeping track of flowering times and get complicated when they overlap. i'm just growing for headstash.

i like the idea of halides and sodiums and liked the bud i got from just a 400w halide in a mini SOG. i think the blue light helps bring out some fruity terpenese. when i DO get my SCROG screens up & running, they'll be no more than 3 feet to an edge and i think closer to 2' 8" each side by side. if that doesn't concentrate enough light, i'm planning on making reflectors with light diffusing white panels that are flush to the edges of the screens and within a foot or so of flush to the light's glass.

i've even toyed with the idea of pointing shoplights up from under the screen, but it gets complicated and at least makes watering harder.

there isn't enough info on SCROGging online. it's easy to learn, but questions like yours and my own "how many square inches should this strain or that be given on a screen?" aren't easy to find answers too. it'd be nice learning some tips & tricks outside the basics. hope to learn a few things here.

well i do LST and SOG all the time, and yes its different for each plant. just give them plenty of time and youll be ok. i use everything, copper wire, string, dried out stems from previous branches to support currently flowering branches...

ive done a lot of different ways, not topping, topping once or twice, or taking a scissor to it like a mad man, and i gotta say, i like having a dozen or so tops, all around the same height. ill never not cut a plant again... if its staying indoors

cool. i like the idea of just letting the plants do their own thing and plucking the goodies. that's why i like breeding. the plants put out such goodness that their genes get naturally selected for best.

disturbing avatar you have there.

i'll be training everything on a pair of light wood frames i'll hang from my lights' I beams and line them with twine tied to O hooks that are easy to set below the frame to prevent the wrist banging on nails or screws on someone else's frame i saw. with the top few strains i've tried and 850 watts or so and 2 @ 3' x 2'8" frames, i can get some headstash some day. the only way to get the best is to DIY.

So nick would top every strain and maybe clean up some of the ones that have natural squatty structures so as to improve light penetration and eliminate fluff.

Anyone else got specific a training 'regimen' for a particular strain?
