Transplanting between 2 x Flood & Drain

Hi, Long time reader - first time poster... hoping someone can help.

I have 2 x Flood & Drain set ups, 1 veg room, 1 flower room..

The plants I have are ready to go from veg to flower, they have been grown in big rockwool cubes in small a claypellet medium. The plants are very healthy and have a ton of roots that have spewed out below/trhough the rockwool.. Here's my question/problem.

To move these I'm gonna rip a bunch of roots, there's no avoiding it.. How detremental to the plant will this be? Once I place the plants in new room I should give them 24 hours of darkness for them to recover from the transplant/shock right?

I hope someone can help me out... These plants are SO healthy with trunk like colas. I guess my main concern is the roots getting ripped to pieces in the move.

Thanks alot... :-|

I have pretty much the same setup you do, I just started from seeds about a week ago though. I was wondering the same thing, if there is a way to do that without hurting them badly..that would make my life easier. But I think the idea behind the setup, at least how I envisioned it was you grow and keep your mothers in the veg and take cuttings for your flower room. The only time Im going to move the mothers is when I've taken all the cuttings I can get, then they're going to be made into oil, so you don't have to concern yourself with damaging the roots. But Im looking forward to someone with a better idea.

Welcome, dingus!

Good question, and a good problem to have! I'd say that the real problem is not having to tear roots, but that you vegged them too long, but I'm sure that you've already figured that out. Since you have to separate them, do it gently. Flooding the roots with water should make it easier to pull apart. I take it the cubes are sitting on a bed of rocks? Just have your similar bed in the flowering room ready, and flood immediately.

Next time, put the cube and the rocks in their own pots. Or you could do that now, it would allow you to move the plants during flowering.

"trunk-sized colas" huh? That sounds crazy! Now would this be like an overseas trunk, or more like a carry-on bag? :blsmoke:

HTH

Thanks for your help potroast, makes sense with the pellets in the pots thing... of course I would never have thought of something like that, haha.

I probably did let them veg too long (by the sounds of things) as I was building the second room, took longer than expected (ps - first hydro grow). I think they were in there for like 6 weeks under 400watt 16/8 hours, The strain only grows to 75-100 cm mark, will having let the plants veg for that long having any detramentel(sp!) effects on the end result? or the opposite? now their on 12/12 under 600w.

Thanks again for your help! Much appreciated!

No it won't be detrimental as long as you have enough heigth in your room to accomadate the addition plant height. It will increase yield. Kinda like plants grow bigger outside becuase of the longer vegging period. VV
