Transplanting Sux Discuss With Me.

Wanted to get people's opinions on this. Currently I put my clones from root cube/aero or solo cup seedlings to 1 gallon pots. My final pots are 15 gallon, possibly upping that.

My issue is that my babies roots fill a 1 gallon pot real quick. By 6" tall or so, roots are through the drain Holes, and growth seems to slow significantly. I've messed around with intermediate repotting to 5s or 7s with noticeably good results, but have had no issue going right to 15s from the 1g. I just usually am quite root bound by that point.

i have no concerns at all aout roots spreading too wide, and wasting area in the middle of the pot. All areas of the pots get used, when I check the soil for dampness in my 15s before floweri can't get my finger in to the 2nd knuckle, the roots are so dense.

I guess my question is how ppl feel about going straight from cloner/solo cup right to a 15 or 20 gallon pot? Other than looking quite silly. I put a new seedling in a 1 gallon today instead of a solo cup and it looked pretty rediculous. I can't imagine a little stub In the middle of a 15-20 gallon.

Assuming I'm not worried about wasting water, I could see it as a possible waste of nutes.

Another option I was considering was half filling my pots and then instead of repotting, lifting the plant and adding more dirt when that was done. My concerns with that were shading of light from the edges of the pot for girls not directly under my hoods.

A possible solution I was thinking of for that was some sort of insert for the pot to displace half the soil and raise the plant up. A plastic cylinder of some sort that maybe takes up half of the bottom of a large pot. My plant is getting root bound I can lift her up and add the soil underneath.

I guess my concern with this issue would be light footprint for such young plants. I have the lights but I guess It would be wasteful.

I'd be highly interested in ppls opinions.

transplanting into bigger pots.....aids in rapid growth. if you are in no hurry, you can plant seedlings into 7 gal pots, but they will spend most energy below the soil line for a long time.

I was entertaining the option of eliminating the 1 gallons and just doing 5 or 7 to 15 or 20.

It sounds like what u are saying is if there is too much room for roots, the plant will spend it's time growing roots instead of greens?

It doesn't seem like that would be a bad thing, in fact it seems like just the opposite happens to me. When the roots run out of room to grow that is when the plant growth stalls out.

that's when ya transplant. as soon as roots poke thru bottom of pot. don't wait for it to bind up. clone > 6" pot > 10" pot > 5gal (or w/e your final size is).......that's what i have been told;)

My issue is that my final pot is currently 18" and I'm thinking of upping that a bit. Actually where I get my pots 10g and 15gallon are both 18". I was just basically wondering if anyone ever put a seedling or rooted clone into a 10-20+ gallon pot before, and what they liked or didn't like about the experience :).
