Trimming and topping.

Hello everyone. Got couple questions about trimming and topping. My plants are 4 weeks yesterday. They are wedding cake strain. Im here to ask if they would still be to young to trim or top at this time for them? 4 weeks since i put them in pots from germinating. Right now, they are going into 6 nodes. I would appreciate any advice and input. Thanks everyone

Hi BlueDreamer

I top my plants first time above the third node, but I usually let them grow up to node 5 or 6 then throw away the topping.

Click my journal thread at the bottom of this post and you can see the progression of topping and bushyness of the plants.

I would top the plant, in the big picture in the first post, above the middle (3rd) node then top again as many times as needed.

The set of branches on the node below (2nd node) will catch up to the two top branches from the 3rd node, and you can eventually top them as well.

If you leave topping until the 6th node the lower branches spend the whole grow trying to catch up to the top branches, and the plant is taller.

One of the main reasons I top low on the 3rd node is to keep the plant as short as possible.

Hello there. Thanks for your reply. Sorry didnt reply right away. Much appreciated. So basically, you recommend to cut all plants above the 3rd node? Doesnt matter if its at the 8th nodes starting? I seen your posts and very nice!!! And thats my goal for them to look like that.

Trimming/topping stunts their growth for a while. I wouldn't do it. Instead look into LST, you can keep doing this and get a bush with tons of tops/buds without stunting the plant

I was just thinking that Lime, half a dozen correct answers and everyone with a rational for their choice.

Top above the third to get 2 colas; The plant recovers and grows two colas and you top, again, twice above the 4th node and get 4 colas, top, again, 4 times above the 5th node and get 8 colas; 6th node for 16 colas and 7th for 32 colas.

Thats about all the colas you'll need in a 4x4 tent with 4 plants.

It's very simple to do, especially if the plants are all clones of the same strain. I find topping easier than LSTing.

FIM works great, less stress on younger plants. ;)
Hi there. Thanks for your response. I have 4 plants that are growing quite well. I topped 2 of them and fimmed one to experiment. The 2 i topped were starting their 6th node. Same with the 3rd one i fimmed at the 6th node. The 4th plant is still little small and but has 6 nodes. So since its little, i figured ill wait on that one maybe couple weeks.

Exactly how to do it... try different style/ techniques and see the results as they grow, you'll see what works best for you!

Once branching starts growing you'll be able to start LST! :bigjoint:

And Have fun doing it , cuz they are pretty resilient to US
