True Aeroponics

Just a couple of questions before i get started. Im making my own aeroponics system where i will take cuttings and place them in neoprene collars and bottom of the stem a couple of inches above the bottom of my net pot. How would i position the misters? I mean where would the mist be pointed to? Im guessing rite into the pot and when the roots grow long a foot or so, the mist would slowly accumulate on the root and slide down while nutrients are bein drank. Does that sound rite?

well it really depends on the type of misters you have. Most of the misters you see are really sprayers. NASA research has shown that aeroponic water droplets should be between 5-50 microns for long term aeroponics. The best way to achieve this is through high pressure pumps and air compressors to create hydro-atomized droplets.

The regular irrigation misters we are using produce droplets that are way too large on average, so it really is sort of like an NFT system with the nutrient rich water sprayed on the roots and then left to drip down along them during the dry period.

Back to your questions. The positioning that works best for you will depend on the type of misters and the layout.
Start with the manifold an inch or so below the net pots. Remove a pot and stick your finger in the hole with the system running. If your finger is drenched lower the manifold until it appears that your finger is getting a nice fine spray of small water droplets. Make sure every net pot is getting good coverage too.

I'm using a true aero fogger (Nutramist brand) for my clones but an NFT for my grow. The NFT is working awesome. I built my system based on Stinkbud's system but with a few mods because of my lack of space. My 5 week old plants are friggin monsters at nearly 38" tall and just starting to get little bud sites. Check out Stinkbud's system; you can't go wrong with it and he has detailed plans.
