The term "scab" has been around since the 14th century (UK) to discribe non union workers who cross a strike picket line to take jobs that union workers have earned and pay dues for, union workers strive for better working conditions, better pay, vacation time, sick and personal time, 40 hour work week (you can thank unions for that).
I am a diehard union member to local 638 (steamfitters) since '79 and local 295 since '92 (operating engineers, construction).
We get continuous education in the field your in, and get paid. I've been sent to Rochester, NY, New Orleans, La., Houston, Texas. To go to school and stay on top of my game. Base pay is $39.41 @ hour for a helper, and $61.90 @ hour for journeymen. Full vestment after 5 years. Time and half for work beyond 40 hours, Saturdays, double time for Sundays, triple time for Holiday. Base to base pay for "on call" callouts, my own truck, gas card. Write off tools, uniforms, boots, washing expense.
I have lifetime medical, 2nd best to municipal workers in NYC.
All of this was accomplished protesting, strikes, work actions. So when I see a "scab", "rat" crossing a picket line I see scum who wants to work for less money, more hours and no bennies destroying all the hard work we did.
I live in a "right to work" State now (I'm retired) or rather a "right to fuck" workers, I met with fellow HVAC workers here in my State who earn $22 bucks an hour, 35-37 work week, no OT, no sick or personal days, 2 weeks vacation and no bennies. Fuck scabs! They get what they deserve...fucked over!

Sorry base pay for 1st year helpers is $37.14@hour or 60% of journeymen pay with a 6 month performance/salary review at which time salary is bumped 5% until he/she reaches 100% of journeymen pay.
Most companies start you off at 40%, some 50%, few 60%, and only trade school graduates are hited.
