Type of water

I am new to growing but feel like it's going well. However, I am getting mixed comments about the type of water to use. I've been using distilled water which I read online was fine to use. I tried tap water but it made my plants wacky. Then I was told to pour my tap water into a bucket, let it sit overnight, then test the PH. I really would prefer to use tap water. I never smell chlorine in it but do I have to really go through all of the testing of the minerals, etc. in it? Thanks.

Contact the city and ask for a water report.

My city mails us one every so often and they have it posted on the city's website...you'd be surprised our water actually has so continmants in it but they cla it's in such low levels that it's consider safe

contaminants such as viruses and bacteria runnoff from livestock operations contaminants pesticides herbicides organic chemical contaminants including synthetic and volatile organic chemical byproducts sewage septic systems oil storm water radioactive contaminants gas production petroleum production wastewater....but they are considered safe amounts so we're good right? Lol
