Dude im in construction and i have often spent time thinking about this..i just have to get a mortage first
Underground bunker all the way dude.
This might be impossible for alot of people but if you have a site your in luck.
If you build an enclosed toolshed over the entrance hatch you can go into your toolshed... lock the door and descend to your secret g room. If you want i could show you a good layout and how to go about constructing it.
If anyone wants me i'll be in the toolshed....how many times have we heard that growing up?? I would prefer for my visitors and kids to think i was always making things in the toolshed with all my time rather than up in the attic doing something secretive.
Don't do a sog/scrog or any of that dude, if your not restricted by money motivated growing and you want to enjoy the most beautiful looking and best plants you should stick them in soil have a 2 room setup and veg to the max.
Of course take clones too.

15 grand will give you nice size garden.
How many plants do you wanna grow?
Do you want have seperate rooms or cabinets for the different stages of growth?
Like a Mother room, Vegg room, cloning room, Blooming room, and a drying room.
Once you can figure out how much you wannna grow every 4 months, or every 2 months,
or every month, or every 2 weeks will determine how much you should spend.
For example:
Let's say you wanna bloom 16 plants every 2 months. Which should give you at least lb. to a lb and a half.
You'll need at least 2 - 1000 watters.
Plus your ventilation equipment for that area, and also all the other shit like nutes and mediums.
For just the lights and crap you'll need for that area your already looking at close to 2 grand.
And thats just the blooming area.
In order to bloom every 2 months, you'll need a vegg/mother/cloning/ room.
This will probably set you back another grand or so just for the equipment for that room.
The cost of the construction will depend on a bunch of variables.
But I'm guessing you could build a nice grow area with seperate rooms for about 3-4 grand.
Then there will be about a grand or 2 for misc, bullshit that you'll need along the way.
There's always misc. bullshit that you gotta buy.
So I'm guessing a 10 grand investment will make you about 20-30 grand a year to start off with.
I've just realized that my advice pretty much has nothing to do with your question.
