so i went to work today and when i got home my plant was split down the main stem about an inch from where it was topped from. i immediately wrapped the stem in duct tape to bring both sides back together... is there anything i can do to save it and/or make it a better fix?

I did that to my topped plant at about 8 weeks old, overzealous lst and split about 3" down the middle. I sprayed some seasol (liquid seaweed) then tied it together with string. 12weeks later and she's nice n healthy and I still haven't taken the string off.
Duct would work just as well :-) not sure tho if the sticky stuff will affect the plant at all, maybe some else may know

so i put the cloning gel on it and taped them back together tightly... how long should i leave the tape on it?
put a rapid rooter and baggie around it and keep moist and it should root fairly quick but then that's not what this is all about is it? seriously I split one right down the middle, a big one, never thought about rooting gel as a type of whatever purpose it serves but will remember for future reference.
