Unattended Seedlings

I have a couple of questions bruhs. What is the best method for germinating seeds if they have to be left unattended for up to 10 hours a day. I don't want them to dry out or drown in that time.

Also, I planned on starting out the seedlings in plantable pots but again the same problem arises due to me having to go to work. Will these pots dry out in 10 hours? If so, what other methods can I use?

Thanks guys.

I get paranoid my girls will dry up on me from ventilation, I have anxiety after anxiety while I'm at work and there always fine when I get home, but still.

The best unattentive way to germ would be the towel method IMO.

Seed germination requires moisture, heat, and darkness so you can basically use any germination method and leave them alone. It's probably better that they are left alone during this time anyway.

Once they germ, I plant in party cups and put saran wrap over the top to keep the humidity up. You shouldn't have to water for a few days, maybe even a week. Just be sure that when they break soil you have your light on them.

put em right in soil man! you will only need to add water once a day or maybe even once every two days. I always strt them in 4" pots and bottom water them till they a soggy pop the beans in and wait. add maybe an oz. of water everyday if needed.

I plan on putting them in plantable pots after they germinate. I read that they don't hold moisture. Do you think they'll hold it for 10 hours? They're pretty small.

I plan on putting them in small, plantable pots (the kind where the roots can penetrate the walls) after they germinate so that I can transplant them with no worries later after they have developed a strong root system.

Put them in the soil directly. No need to do anything else. playing with paper towel and other methods like that are unneeded and simply increase the risk of something going wrong on you since it needs more human interaction.

OK I will germinate them in soil. What about these kind of pots not retaining moisture? How fast can they dry up?

he's right, there are small fibers on the root tip that the papertowel can tear off and damage the root.

In my opinion, and I've experimented with this quite extensively, the best way to ensure germination of your seeds is to put them in a cup of water, put them in a dark warm spot and let them pre-soak for a while, usually about 12 hours with fresh seeds, and NOT let the seeds POP in the water, DO NOT let the tap root form underwater, it is very sensitive and should only emerge once PLANTED. You should keep checking on them and poke at them gently with a clean finger until they sink in the water, THIS means that the seed has absorbed enough water to move to the next stage, gentle removal and planting directly into soil and watering!! I have a 100% germination rate using this method and the seedlings usually pop through the soil within 24 hours using this pre-soak method that avoids them drying out completely! this method allows you to pre-determine viable seeds before planting them, gives them a kickstart and also avoids the common problem of drying before the seeds absorb enough water to grow when either planting directly into the soil or using the paper towel method!

one other thing you can do if you are really nervous, put a clear plastic cup upside down on top of the dirt. this makes a small humidity dome to lock in the moisture.

I'll give it a try!
