Uncle Ben's Gardening Tweeks and Pointers

I use A/N micro 5-0-1 to try and balance my nute line to be like UB says. thats right i said it be like big ben;) I think you can find something high in N and doctor up any nute line if you choose to go with his numbers allthough it might be just as easy for some to just use what he is using. In my case i did not stumble on his findings until after i spent lots of cash on nutes.Something to think about when reading how others get good grows is we are not all using the same water or dirt, some of us are blessed with perfect tap water with lots of good stuff in it already or they just happen to have perfect soil right in there own backyard.good luck and read on brother.
 
@sixstring.. no you're absolutely right. Over the years I've been given a few nute formulas by some1 and was told, "this is a sure fire recipe" and I just blindly accepted that thinking, "oh, i trust this person and they must be right". For example, buying Cutting Edge 1gal bottles of Plant Amp and UJB - which are like $100 each. I didnt even know WTF they were doing, I was just naively going along. That is why I'm so determined to just sort of rip out all the old "fixtures" in my brain, and almost start over, so to speak. I've done about 4 yrs of soil grow, and really never been satisfied with my yields. Granted I've made my share of mistakes (who doesnt), but damn, its gotten old being disappointed over and over - yah know? Plus being told that this "method" works in other setups, but not mine, I just felt stupid and incompetent.. now I'm realizing THAT person is the one that is incompetent and full of BS trying to pass off the fact that there would be identical similarities and variables across the board. NOT SO!

the Canna nutes are no really no less expensive than some of the Cutting Edge nutes I just referenced. the A/B combo alone for the larger container is also $100.. The rhizo is like $60.. the PK 13/14 is another $60.. you get my drift. then I start looking at this Jack's Classic and how cheap it is.. and my jaw just drops. I'm just surprised there is no dealer for JR Peters here in Bay Area.
 
Im new to growing and my plants have been planted for exactly 5 weeks. i have planted my self blue mystic autoflowering seeds. how do i kno when its a good time to flower. and exactily how do i do it. Or do i even have to do it because it says there autoflower.

Hi UB,

I don't want to stretch you any thinner than you are now, but after looking at the advanced tech. section of this forum for the dozenth time I'm tired of the constant is so and so line on nutrients good and the whole internalized, dogmatic discussions of overpriced water.

What we really need (if it is not already buried in this forum) is someone with street-thread to simply explain the nuts and bolts of essential elements and drive a stake into these monsters.

I would write it, but no one would listen to me as I find myself parroting the same lines over and over again. Will you flip the switch on the wrecking ball and knock down the brick wall I'm talking at all the time?

I use about those. I think it should be more along the lines of a snake oil salesmen witch hunt type of thing. On second thought, scrap it. I think I'm just going to repackage mineral salts for a living.

I think he's been trying to knock down that wall for a long time. Problem is he doesn't do it with fancy marketing in High Times, and other publications. Just my Two Cents.

Thank you Uncle Ben. Not quite a "zen" moment, but I'm a heck of a lot more relaxed after pouring through so much garbage on growing. Bloody misinformation and hype permeates so deeply when casually researching about this plant on the net. ( just like politics ) It's taken me way to long to chew through the balderdash to find any sanity on this subject.

I was wondering how long you could continue to put up with the insanity and aggravation and still be willing to help. But the answer was allready there.

You're welcome. Your secret to success is to treat the plant as a typical plant, tomato plant culture would be great. Don't use cannabis specific foods (they usually contain crap you don't want or need and a K level that is way to high relative to N), use those found on shelves formulated for veggies, foliar plants, etc., understand plant nutrition and understand that cannabis is a flowering foliage plant therefore it needs all the N it can get to support and maintain abundant leaf mass. Learn concepts of light saturation (less becomes more), etc.

IOW, just use common sense.

AHH, finally done. I've read through this whole thread straight for about 10 hours. I want to thank UB obviously, riddle, Dave, and jj too. Their ENDLESS patience is astounding.

I am about 5 months late on getting my MMJ card but I finally have it in the works. I have never grown before, but like to thoroughly research things that I am going to invest in and actually enjoy. Basically I've copy and pasted over 10 pages of useful information (don't worry UB, not posting it anywhere else! lol), and taken a whole bunch of links down. To top if off I now have both Mel's and Jorge's books on the way from Amazon, along with a basics of gardening botany book (figured it couldn't hurt).

I hope to start a well planned out, educated, successful first grow and will be starting a journal as soon as I do. Thanks to you guys again, the information/insight was invaluable.

PS: As stoners how can most of you guys just blindly accept all that marketing bullshit and wonder what the problem is when things go wrong with the Perfect Product Special for $99? I'm only 24, but isn't it sort of a stoner-trait to question things? Especially things that seem too good to be true? lol.

Ah and I normally hover around GC for just the socializing aspect. But I lurk through RIU for the grow knowledge. Sorry how you were treated there BTW UB. Credit should ALWAYS be given. Apparently most of the haters haven't ever had any college courses that cram that down your throat.

Actually quite the opposite. I've been posting for over 10 years, and this has got to be the most gullible group I've ever met. The more one hypes the mantra "grows the biggest buds or your money back", the more they eat it up. I could go into the human element of it all (again) but I'll shut up as most folks know how anti-cannabis specific products I am. Lighting stuff is the same way, it's a rip. I will expose them for what they are every time - shysters taking advantage of folks' naivity, ignorance, and dreams....targeting mainly youth that have never gardened before. Same goes with Dave although he's not as ballsy as I am. :D See the AN versus FoxFarms thread for grins.

You're on the right track. Mel Frank's book is your shortcut to success. The fact that you've never gardened anything will be a strike against you. If you can grow tomatoes, you can grow pot.

Uhhhhh you know Dave, "common cents".

You sound like you're well on your way to growing a great garden. You've probably done more research, without ever popping a seed, than plenty of other growers. I wish more people were knowledge hungry, but like you said..We are dealing with stoners here. Although, I think society in general is that way. Its easier for someone to tell you what is true, and what to do, rather than think for ones self.

If you want to read some good stuff, check out gardenweb forum. Id read the container gardening subforum there, as its right up our alley. Tapla is a great contributor there, and I could provide some links that have taught me alot if you are interested.

One tip I can give you is to closely observe your plants each day. They will tell you alot about how they feel, and how they like what you are doing to them if you are receptive.

I'll have some time tonight to read through some more information, so I bookmarked that subforum. I would definitely appreciate any links you found helpful! PM me perhaps?

I plan to check up on the plants each morning before work. Then after I get home from work/class I will do whatever maintenance is needed. I'll be recording/logging/taking pictures just about each day, so that I can try to figure out the cause/effect relationship of what I do and really internalize what's happening on a day-to-day basis and why.
