Union extortion now illegal in Michigan

yeah, those 40 hour work weeks and safe working conditions were over the top.

corporations, on the other hand, are indeed a merry band of people doing actual work (not just pushing paper around!) who would never cheat, exploit, or otherwise behave unethically at the expense of their workers to up their bottom line, pensions, or compensation packages.

that would NEVER happen.

Granted. But, it is the same argument as Religion. It has relevance at certain times. Not so much, in other times. The Pendulum swings.

I live in a right to work state and it has been for my life at least so i don't really understand the whole union system, but if i worked for hostess i would be pretty pissed at how my union handled that situation.

is there an option of not joining the union, not paying dues, and not expecting representation, meaning i get to go to work, work for the amount my boss and i decide on and only owe the government at the end of the day?

Yeah, it is called minimum wage.

i guess that's why i don't understand unions, I get paid well over minimum wage in my state and have never had to deal with or pay union extortion to get it. I just can't see how they are benefiting anyone except the union leaders.

Well, in some industries, you certainly have unions to thank for favorable working conditions and fair compensation. You must be one of those lucky people with a trade that is in higher demand than supply. For those who are at the mercy of an employer to SURVIVE, collective bargaining keeps them from being wage slaves.

I live in NC, i just never knew much about unions. we don't have unions in the south, but we don't seem to have all the issues they seem to up north. I would imagine way back in the day unions had their part in negotiating the laws of this state but we seem to work perfectly reasonably with out them now.

I wish i understood why unions seem unnecessary in the south but most feel they are almost required in the north. What is so different these days? I understand how back when the south was mostly farming and north was mostly industrial but its been decades since these stereotypes held true.

Well, North Carolina has a property crime rate 50.3% above national rate, so I'm going to go ahead and make the controversial link between low wages and higher property crime rate. Maybe if NC had more Union thugs, it would have fewer street thugs. I don't know very many people who live the turd burgler life even if they make a good legal living. Let's see where this debate goes.

*edit* Excuse me, that was 2010, it is slightly better in 2012.

I answered your question, now answer mine, why would you not want to join a union?

no you didn't answer it you just side stepped it with an assumption but, i would not be part of a union because my work ethic prevents me from taking 2 hour lunch breaks. Id rather get the job done and leave early (not being payed for the hours we left early)

but if you want a real reason, I wouldn't want another person telling what i can an can not do. We have enough of that already.

So now you have GOV>state>City>union>boss

But... you wouldn't be pissed that management - um, spent your pension, gave themselves bonuses and drove the company into bankrupcy twice all the while blaming you for all of the trouble, right?

What I can't understand is the same people who don't believe that anyone should get something for nothing, on the backs of others have no problem making a law stating that union members should get representation from the union - for free. Can anyone who believes that Obama got into office by offering free stuff explain this?

Dubya got his campaign contributions by offering tax cuts to the wealthiest.

i would certainly think they would be, and justifiably so.
