there can be more water under the dirt than you think, same reason we can dig for wells. If you're planting clones then iirc they wont develop that deep taproot that lets their roots grow downward toward the water, and whatever you plant from a store likely wont grow the same as the plants that have grown naturally in the area for awhile. Natural selection and all that
