Up in Legal Smoke: Canada’s Marijuana Mess

Marijuana is a hotly discussed topic in Canada. It brings about lots of opposing views and passionate debates. By analyzing available data on marijuana usage and law enforcement in this infographic, we wanted to bring more to the discussion table.

We used data from official government sources to show that the state of marijuana in Canada is one big legal mess. Despite being illegal, marijuana is heavily consumed. Plenty of people go unpunished for breaking the law, but those who do get charged end up with a criminal record that marks them for life. The law enforcement rate seems arbitrary. The arrest and charge rates differ a lot depending on the geographical region, while the usage rates don’t.

That could be an indication that enforcement depends on the police division and/or a court office.

Being number 1 shows Harpco's policies allow Canadian kids to obtain it easier and use it more than the rest of the world.

Sure makes him look like an idiot when he says regulation would make it easier for kids to get it and more would use it.

He's been changing the mj laws and punishments for how long now?

Looks about as messy up there as it does for us Yanks.

I wonder when the right of people to do as they like without harm to others will ever be respected?

i spoke to our local RCMP and the supervisor said they weren't really enforcing at this time....not what that shows...haha
must be the rest of the province and not the lower mainland

I have to admit, that took me by surprise. Thought it would be the over 24 crowd for sure.

Kelowna RCMP are really going after gang members and that's why they are the hotspot of marijuana charges in bc. The RCMP say they are only targeting gang members and associates not your normal rec smokers but consider the source.

I guess that shows just how well the Harpcreep's policies are working .....and he says Trudeau wants to make weed available to kids - looks like Steverino's doing that really well already
